“Any Ol’ Barstool” is a song co-written and recorded by American country music artist Jason Aldean. It was released to radio on November 28, 2016 as the fourth single from his album They Don’t Know. The song peaked at number 14 on both the Billboard Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs charts respectively. “Any Ol’ Barstool” was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), denoting sales of over a million digital copies in the United States. It received similar chart success in Canada, reaching number 10 on the Canada Country chart and number 97 on the Canadian Hot 100. The song was written by Aldean, Tyler Hubbard, and Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line.

“Any Ol’ Barstool” is a country ballad with an approximate length of three minutes and thirty seconds. In it, the narrator compares his current situation– wallowing in drunkenness at a bar–to when he was in a happy and committed relationship with his now-ex-lover. He reflects that he would rather be alone than with someone who does not love him back; “I’d rather be anywhere but here / In any ol’ barstool /next to any ol’ me.” The first verse is written in an alternating rhythm of iambic tetrameter and trimeter, while the chorus is primarily in iambic tetrameter. Michael Cantrell of Taste of Country gave the song a positive review, praising its production and Aldean’s vocal performance.

“Better Man” by Little Big Town

“Better Man” is a song co-written and recorded by American country music group Little Big Town. It was released on October 28, 2016, as the second single from their seventh studio album The Breaker (2017). The song reached number one on both the US Billboard Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs charts, giving the group their ninth and tenth Number One hits on the latter chart. It also peaked at number 17 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was written by the group’s members Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Phillip Sweet and Jimi Westbrook, with Shauna Kaariahiwa serving as a track producer.

“Better Man” is a mid-tempo ballad backed by acoustic guitar with uptempo drums. In it, the female narrator is disappointed with her current lover, stating that she deserves a “better man”.

Critical reception towards “Better Man” was positive. Taste of Country praised its “heartfelt delivery” while also calling it a “radio-friendly track”. Billy Dukes of Taste of Country also ranked it at number five on his list of Top 10 Little Big Town Songs. TheBoot.com placed it at number two on their list of Top 10 Little Big Town Songs, with contributing editor Jon Freeman praising Karen Fairchild’s “powerhouse vocal performance”. Jonathan Bernard of Paper ranked it as the best single released in 2016, while also complimenting its production and lyrics. Tamar Anitai of MTV News described it as an “emotional powerhouse”, while also naming it as one of country music’s best love songs. Rolling Stone ranked it at number two on their list of 50 Best Country & Americana Songs of 2016: Critics’ Picks, describing Fairchild’s vocal as “a shiver-inducing performance that doesn’t oversell an instant classic”.
