The story behind the musical
We Will Rock You is a rock musical based on the songs of British rock band Queen with a book by Ben Elton. The musical tells the story of a group of Bohemian revolutionists who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion, and live music in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts the same.
The musical includes such Queen hits as “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “We Are the Champions”, “Somebody to Love”, and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. We Will Rock You was originally produced by Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Productions and opened in London’s West End in 2002. It has since been staged in more than 28 countries and has been seen by over 16 million people.

The cast features Tony Award nominee Ruby Rakos as “Killer Queen,” GAME OF THRONES’ Pippa Bennett-Warner as “Scaramouche,” and Erich Bergen as “Galileo.”
We Will Rock You follows two revolutionaries, Galileo Figaro and Scaramouche, who join forces to save rock n’ roll in a post-apocalyptic world where there is no music and everyone must dress, think and act the same.

We Will Rock You, the musical based on the songs of British rock band Queen, is coming to San Jose! Ahead of its opening night on September 5, we sat down with the show’s producer and director to get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to bring this high-energy production to life.
Producer Vaughn Tucker says that one of the challenges with We Will Rock You is that it’s not just a concert. “It’s a full-fledged theatrical production, with over 30 actors and a live band playing Queen’s hits. We have a lot of moving parts, and it takes a lot of coordination to pull it all off.”
Director Kristopher Young says that another challenge is making sure that the show pays tribute to Queen without imitating them. “We want to make sure that we’re honoring their legacy while also putting our own spin on things. That’s why we’ve brought in some incredible talent, both onstage and off, to help make this show truly special.”
We Will Rock You opens at San Jose’s Center for the Performing Arts on September 5 and runs through September 15. Tickets are available now.
The making of We Will Rock You
The musical was written by Ben Elton, who had previously worked with May on the sitcom The Young Ones and on the film Gorky Park. The music was supervised by Brian May and produced by Queen’s long-time producer Mack.
The musical tells the story of a group of Bohemians who fight against the brainwashing of consumers in a dystopian society set in the future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts alike, following the dictates of GlobalSoft, a powerful company that controls all aspects of life. We Will Rock You follows two revolutionaries, Galileo Figaro and Scaramouche, as they try to save Rock from being destroyed by GlobalSoft and regain freedom of thought and expression.
The musical contains Queen’s classic rock hits from their heyday in the 1970s as well as new songs written specifically for the show. The original cast recording was released in 2002, reaching number 2 on the UK album charts and selling over 2 million copies worldwide.
