New Orleans
In the early 1900s, the port city of New Orleans was a melting pot of cultures from around the world. It was also the birthplace of a new type of music called jazz.
Jazz was developed by African American musicians who mixed elements of their own culture with influences from European and Caribbean music. The result was a unique sound that soon spread beyond New Orleans.
Jazz quickly became popular in other parts of the United States, and by the 1920s, it was being played all over the world. Today, jazz is appreciated by people of all cultures and is considered one of America’s greatest contributions to music.
Chicago
Chicago is home to some of the earliest and most influential jazz musicians. The city’s vibrant jazz scene was shaped by talented performers from all over the country who flocked to Chicago in the early 1900s.
Chicago’s jazz history begins with musicians like Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong, who helped to develop the new style of music in the city’s clubs and bars. Chicago was also home to many innovative record labels, including Blue Note and Delmark, which helped to promote the spread of jazz around the world.
Today, Chicago remains an important center for jazz, with a thriving scene that features both traditional and contemporary performers. The city is also home to the acclaimed Jazz Institute of Chicago, which offers educational programs and hosts musical events throughout the year.
Characteristics of Jazz
Jazz is a musical art form that originated in the African-American communities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime.
Improvisation
Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on different national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to many distinctive styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. In the 1930sswing big bands emerged featuring soloists who would improvise on the melody over a fixed harmonic framework—sometimes using Western major or minor scales but often playing altered chord progressions with “passing” chords that created novel harmonic interests that were strongly rhythmic offset by melodic tension.
Swing
Swing is a pulsing, syncopated rhythm that was first heard in jazz around 1927. The name “swing” came from the phrase “get in the swing,” meaning to feel the rhythm and get moving. The earliest jazz bands playing Swing were led by trumpet player Louis Armstrong and pianist Jelly Roll Morton. In Swing, the music is built around a strong beat that you can tap your foot or dance to. Usually, there are eight beats in each measure, and each beat is divided into two parts (thus, you sometimes hear Swing rhythm referred to as “eighth-note swing”). The accents usually fall on beats two and four, which gives Swing its characteristic “loping” feel.
Polyrhythm
One of the defining characteristic of jazz is polyrhythm, which is the simultaneous use of two or more rhythms that are not readily reconcilable. This gives jazz its syncopated, “off-beat” feeling. In other words, one cannot tap one’s foot to jazz (at least not in 4/4 time). The most common polyrhythmic figure in jazz is 3 against 2 (also known as a hemiola), but any combination of odd-numbered beats against even-numbered beats can create a polyrhythmic effect.
Famous Jazz Musicians
Jazz music was developed by some of the most famous musicians of all time. These musicians were pioneers in their field and helped to create a new genre of music. Jazz music has been enjoyed by millions of people around the world and has influenced other genres of music as well.

He played in marching bands and dance bands in the city’s red-light district, known as Storyville. In 1922, he moved to Chicago to play in the famous big band of King Oliver.
