A Charlie Brown Christmas is a jazz instrumental album by the Vince Guaraldi Trio, released in 1965 on Fantasy Records. The album was conceived as a soundtrack to the animated TV special of the same name, which was created by Charles M. Schulz and directed by Bill Melendez. The TV special aired on December 9, 1965, on CBS.
The album features eight tracks of original music written and performed by Guaraldi, and two covers of traditional Christmas songs: “O Tannenbaum” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”. It became a surprise hit, reaching No. 4 on Billboard’s pop album chart in early 1966 and staying there for 13 weeks. It ultimately went double platinum, selling over 2 million copies in the United States. In 2004, it was released on compact disc for the first time by Fantasy/Concord Music Group.
