The Baltimore jazz scene is heating up with some fresh new talent. Check out these up-and-coming jazz artists who are making a name for themselves in Charm City.

Hailing from Philadelphia, PA, trumpeter Josh Lawrence is a rising star on the jazz scene. He’s been making waves with his debut album “Color Theory” and his performance at the 2018 Keystone Korner benefit concert.

Pianist Cyrus Chestnut is a Baltimore native who has been performing since he was a child. He has toured with Dizzy Gillespie and Betty Carter, and has recorded over 30 albums as a leader. Chestnut is known for his soulful playing and his ability to cross genres.

Saxophonist Michael Formanek is a Baltimore native who has been called “one of the most original instrumentalists of our time” by The New York Times. He has released several critically acclaimed albums and has performed with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Anthony Braxton and Dave Douglas.

Jazz Education in Baltimore

While Baltimore is home to a thriving jazz scene, there is also a strong focus on jazz education. The Baltimore Jazz Education Consortium is a group of eight different educational institutions that work together to promote jazz education in the city.

The Consortium offers a variety of different programs, including the Jazz Institute, which provides professional development opportunities for teachers, and the Jazz Academy, which offers after-school and weekend classes for students of all ages. In addition, the Consortium supports the annual Charm City Jazz Festival, which brings world-renowned jazz musicians to perform in Baltimore.

The Consortium’s members include the Peabody Institute, Morgan State University,Baltimore City Community College, Maryland Institute College of Art, Coppin State University, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Goucher College, and Loyola University Maryland.
