What is Jazz?
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States. It is characterized by blue notes, call-and-response vocals, polyrhythms, and improvisation. Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical traditions, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime.
Origins of Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States. It emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and developed from roots in blues and ragtime. Jazz is seen by many as “America’s classical music”. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, jazz has become recognized as a major form of musical expression. It then emerged in a variety of different styles, often specific to particular subgenres, regions, and eras.
Elements of Jazz
Jazz is often improvised and is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and asymmetrical meter. Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to many distinctive styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. In the 1930s Swing big bands emerged in the United States playing jazz influenced by Louis Jordan
Duke Ellington
Count Basie
and others. Swing joints (venues) such as Kansas City’s Reno Club were described by journalist Plume Latraverse as “the nightclub equivalent of an all-night scientific conference.” In the 1940s bebop emerged, led by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie
Miles Davis
and others. Other styles of jazz developed at this time include cool jazz
which saw a mellower approach to bebop; Kansas City Jazz; Latin Jazz “jazz con sabor”; hard bop
which looked back to gospel music and blues for inspiration; soul jazz which incorporated syncopated piano lines with R&B passtimes; post-bop which indulged avant-garde harmonic ideas but kept a firm rhythmic foundation; Avant-garde jazz explored atonality with unusual time signatures
and free improvisation while Modal Jazz relied on scales rather than chord progressions yielding a more relaxed atmosphere. The 1960s saw Jazz change once again as electric guitars
double basses
and drums were added giving birth to fusion subgenres such as acid jazz
funk jazz
dies–directly influenced by rock music–and smooth jazz developed while traditionalist die-hards found themselves listening to newly emerging artists such as Wynton Marsalis representing the neo bop movement. Jazz-rock fusion appeared in the late 1960s/early 1970s and combined elements of both genres to sometimes controversial results. Other subgenres include Afro-Cuban jazz which explores the rhythms of Latin America while remaining true to classic Jazz sensibilities; ethno or world jazz takes cues from non-Western sounds while retaining improvisational traditions; spiritual or gospel influenced Jazz first appeared in the 1940s led by artists such as Kirk Franklin; experimental or free Jazz came out of Avant-garde movements in Europe during mid 20th century often lead by iconoclasts such as Ornette Coleman
Cecil Taylor
Anthony Braxton
Albert Ayler whose atonal compositions eschewed swing rhythms for undulating meters often following no set pattern making them unplayable by conventional ensembles; NuJazz is a recent subgenrewhich fuses classic sensibility with contemporary electronic production techniques often resultingin atmospheric soundscapes rather than dance tracks.
