What Needs to Change About Classical Music
Contents
Classical music has been around for centuries, but it’s starting to lose its luster in the modern world. What needs to change about classical music in order to keep it relevant?
The Problem
It is no secret that classical music is in a state of crisis. Attendance at concerts and opera is down, and orchestras and opera companies are folding up all over the world. Record companies are cutting back on their classical divisions, and radio stations are dropping classical music from their programs. What is the problem?
Lack of interest from young people
Though it has been around for centuries, classical music is currently facing a decline in popularity, particularly among young people. In a genre that is often seen as stuffy and elitist, classical music has difficulty appealing to young audiences who are used to more modern genres of music.Though it has been around for centuries, classical music is currently facing a decline in popularity, particularly among young people. In a genre that is often seen as stuffy and elitist, classical music has difficulty appealing to young audiences who are used to more modern genres of music.
There are several things that need to change about classical music in order to make it more accessible and interesting to young people. First of all, the education system needs to do a better job of teaching children about the genre and its history. Many kids grow up without even knowing what classical music is, let alone being exposed to it. Secondly, the orchestration of classical pieces needs to be updated so that they are more exciting and contemporary. Finally, the social perception of classical music needs to be changed so that it is seen as something cool and hip rather than old-fashioned and snooty.
only by making these changes will classical music be able to survive and thrive in the 21st century.
Stuffy reputation
Classical music has a reputation for being stuffy and old-fashioned. This is one of the main reasons why young people today don’t listen to classical music. They think it’s boring, or that it’s only for rich, snooty people.
This perception needs to change. Classical music is actually very diverse, with a wide variety of styles and genres. It can be exciting, emotional, and even funny. And it’s not just for rich people – anyone can enjoy it!
There are lots of ways to make classical music more accessible to young people. For example, concerts could be shorter and more informal, with less formal attire required. And educational programs could do a better job of explaining the history and context of the music, so that it doesn’t seem so intimidating.
If we can make classical music more relatable and enjoyable for young people, we can help preserve this important art form for future generations.
The Solution
There are a number of things that need to change about classical music in order to make it more popular. First and foremost, the music needs to be more accessible to people. It should be easy for people to find and listen to classical music, and there should be more opportunities for people to experience it. Secondly, the music itself needs to be more engaging and relevant to today’s audiences. It should be composed in a way that speaks to modern audiences and covers topics that are relevant to them.
More innovative and modern repertoire
In order to bring in a wider, and younger, audience, the classical music genre needs to be more innovative and modern. For example, adding more popular music covers to the repertoire or having themed concerts (eg. Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, etc.) would attract more people who might not normally go to a classical concert. Additionally, making use of social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat would help reach a wider audience as well.
More engaging performances
Though some may disagree, I believe that a lot of the problem with how unpopular classical music is, has to do with how the music is presented to the audience. I myself am not the biggest fan of classical music, however, I have seen certain performances of it that were so engaging that I actually enjoyed them. The problem is that these types of performances are few and far between. Too often, classical music is presented in a way that is boring and unengaging.
What needs to change is the way classical music is performed. There needs to be more passion and energy put into the performance. The musicians need to make it clear that they are enjoying themselves and that they want the audience to enjoy the music as well. Additionally, the repertoire needs to be updated so that it appeals more to modern audiences. We cannot expect people to be interested in music that was written hundreds of years ago when they can go see a pop concert where the performers are actually put on a stage and interact with the crowd.
Classical music has so much potential to be popular again, but only if those in charge are willing to make some necessary changes.
More affordable ticket prices
As classical music becomes increasingly inaccessible to the average person, it is important to consider ways to make it more affordable. One way to do this is by reducing ticket prices.
Currently, the average ticket price for a concert is $54. However, prices can range anywhere from $20 to over $100. For many people, these prices are simply too expensive. Reducing ticket prices would make classical music more accessible and allow more people to enjoy this art form.
There are a number of ways to reduce ticket prices without affecting the quality of the music or the experience of attending a concert. One way is by working with sponsorships and corporate partners. another way is by holding concerts in smaller venues which would also help reduce production costs.
It is clear that something needs to change in order for classical music to remain accessible and relevant in today’s society. Reducing ticket prices is one way to make this happen.
