KDHX’s History
KDHX’s history is one of determination, hard work, and setbacks. The station has been broadcasting since the late 1990s and has been a staple in the St. Louis music scene ever since. KDHX has faced many challenges over the years, but has always found a way to overcome them.
KDHX’s founding in the late 1970s
In the late 1970s, a group of music lovers in St. Louis came together with a mission: to bring free-form, listener-supported radio to the city. They were inspired by the success of similar stations around the country, like WXRT in Chicago and WERS in Boston.
With the help of a few generous donations, they were able to secure a license from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and launch KDHX 88.1 FM on October 1, 1979. The station went on the air with just 50 watts of power, broadcasting from a makeshift studio in an attic on Maryland Avenue.
But despite its humble beginnings, KDHX quickly found its place in the St. Louis community. In its first year on the air, the station received over 1,000 letters of support from listeners. And in 1980, just one year after signing on, KDHX was named “Radio Station of the Year” by The Riverfront Times .
Today, KDHX is one of the most successful public media organizations in St. Louis, with over 300 volunteers and 40 staff members working together to produce high-quality programming that reflects the diverse interests of our community. We’re proud to be your source for music, arts and culture!
KDHX’s move to the City Museum in the early 1990s
In the early 1990s, KDHX moved to the City Museum in St. Louis. The museum had recently been renovated and was home to a number of businesses and cultural organizations. KDHX was one of the first tenants in the new space, and the station quickly became a hub for the city’s classical music community.
KDHX’s move to the City Museum was a major turning point in the station’s history. The new location allowed KDHX to expand its programming and reach a wider audience. In addition, the station’s proximity to other cultural organizations helped to create a vibrant classical music scene in St. Louis.
Today, KDHX is widely recognized as one of the leading classical music stations in the country. The station offers a wide range of programming, from traditional classical music to contemporary works. In addition, KDHX is home to a number of live performances and events each year.
KDHX’s Programming
KDHX’s programming consists of a wide range of musical styles, including classical, jazz, world music, and more. The programming is provided by a variety of local, national, and international DJs. KDHX also offers a variety of public affairs and news programs.
KDHX’s weekday programming
KDHX’s weekday programming features a variety of musical genres including Classical music, Jazz, Americana, World music, and more.
The station’s flagship program, “KDHX Live,” airs weekdays from 10:00am-3:00pm CT and features live performances from local and national artists, as well as interviews with musicians, composers, and other individuals involved in the music industry.
KDHX also offers a wide variety of music-related educational programming for all ages. “Kidship with KDHX” airs weekdays from 3:00-5:00pm CT and features kid-friendly classical music and stories. “The Learning Hour” airs weekdays from 5:00-6:00pm CT and features educational programs about various musical genres and topics.
KDHX’s weekday programming concludes with “Evening Classics,” a nightly program featuring classical music handpicked by KDHX staff members. “Evening Classics” airs weeknights from 6:00pm-12:00am CT.
KDHX’s weekend programming
KDHX’s programming is a mix of classical music, jazz, folk, and public affairs. The station has live shows seven days a week. Weekday programming includes morning and afternoon drive time shows, as well as midday, evening, and late night programs. KDHX’s weekend programming features a mix of live shows and repeats of popular weekday programs.

KDHX’s volunteer opportunities
KDHX offers a variety of ways for you to get involved with the station. From office work and events to production and on-air shifts, there’s a way for everyone to get involved!
KDHX’s Volunteer Opportunities:
Office Work – assist with administrative tasks, data entry, mailing projects, and more. No experience necessary!
Event Support – help out at KDHX events including concerts, festivals, Membership drives, and more.
Production – assist with the production of on-air content including public service announcements, underwriting spots, and liners.
On-Air Shifts – hosts play music and talk on the air about a variety of topics. No experience necessary!
KDHX’s fundraising efforts
KDHX’s on-air fundraising efforts are crucial to the success and sustainability of the station. Each year, we ask our listeners to make a financial contribution to the station during our Fall Fund Drive and Spring Radiothon. These drives allow us to maintain our programming and operations, which in turn allows us to serve the Greater St. Louis region with quality classical music and educational programming.
In addition to our annual on-air drives, KDHX also hosts a variety of special events throughout the year that help raise funds for the station. These events include everything from music festivals and concerts to gala dinners and Silent Auctions. By attending these events, you can help support KDHX while also enjoying some great live music!
KDHX’s Future
KDHX has been a staple in the St. Louis music scene for almost 30 years, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. The station is known for playing a wide range of music, from jazz and blues to classical and world music. Recently, the station has been exploring new genres and expanding its programming.

KDHX’s plans for the future include continuing to grow our programming to meet the needs of our listeners, increasing our operating budget so that we can make significant upgrades to our facilities, and expanding our coverage area.
