Introduction

Classical music and patriotic songs have been linked together in the United States since the late 18th century. The first known occasion where classical music and patriotism were combined was on July 4, 1776, when Continental Army troops stationed in New York City were treated to a concert of “God Save the King”, “Yankee Doodle”, and other patriotic tunes. The relationship between classical music and patriotism continued throughout the 19th century, with composer John Philip Sousa writing some of the most famous patriotic marches, including “The Stars and Stripes Forever”.
