WGUC first went on the air in October 1949 as WGDP, a 10-watt student-run station broadcasting from the University of Cincinnati. In 1958, the station was purchased by National Educational Radio (now NPR), and its call letters were changed to WGUC. The station increased its power to 100 watts in 1960 and began broadcasting 24 hours a day. In 1971, the station increased its power to 3,000 watts and moved its transmitter to Pendleton County, Kentucky. In 1984, the station became the flagship station of Cincinnati’s only classical music radio network.
