WLRN’s Best of the Best is a weekly, two-hour program that classical music lovers all over South Florida have come to love.

Hosted by WLRN personalities Dave Lawrence and Nancy Klingener, the program features classical music from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern periods, as well as contemporary works by living composers.

Each week, Dave and Nancy showcase a different theme, with an emphasis on education and entertainment. They also take requests from listeners, who can call in or email their requests in advance.

What is Classical Music?

Classical music is art music produced or rooted in the traditions of Western culture, including both liturgical (religious) and secular music. While a more precise term is also used to refer to the period from 1750 to 1820 (the Classical period), this article is about the broad span of time from before the 6th century AD to the present day, which includes the Classical period and various other periods. The central norms of this tradition became codified between 1550 and 1900, which is known as the common-practice period.

Western staff notation is used by composers to indicate to performers the pitches (which pitch class each note belongs to), tempo, meter and rhythms for a piece of music. This can leave less room for places where performers can improvise or add their own embellishments to a pre-composed melody line or chord progression (known as an ostinato). The term “classical music” did not appear until the early 19th century, when it was used in relation to the style of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, or in reference to “standard” works from earlier periods.

The Different Types of Classical Music

Classical music is divided into different periods, which are in turn divided into different styles. The dates given below are only approximate:

The Baroque period – from about 1600 to 1750
The early part of the Baroque period is sometimes called the “First Golden Age” of classical music. It was during this time that some of the most famous composers lived and worked, including Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel and Antonio Vivaldi. The music of this period is characterized by its use of ornamentation and by its complex polyphony (a texture consisting of two or more independent melodic parts sounding at the same time).

The Classical period – from about 1750 to 1820
The Classical period is sometimes called the “Second Golden Age” of classical music. This was a time when the simple, clean melodies and harmonies of the Baroque period gave way to a new type of music which was more expressive and emotional. The most famous composer of this period was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but others include Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven.

The Romantic period – from about 1820 to 1910
During the Romantic period, composers began to experiment with new musical forms and genres. This was a time when composers such as Robert Schumann, Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt were creating some of the most beautiful and expressive music ever written.

The Modernist period – from about 1910 to 1950
During the first half of the 20th century, composers began to rebel against theRomantic ideal of expressing emotion in their music. Instead, they sought to create new ways of organizing sound, often using atonal harmony (a type of harmony in which there is no clear tonal center) and rhythmically complex textures. Some well-known composers from this period include Arnold Schoenberg, Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev.

This year, we are thrilled to honor violinist Julia Fischer, pianist Emanuel Ax, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and conductor John Adams with our prestigious Best of the Best award.

Julia Fischer is one of the most celebrated violinists of her generation. She has recorded best-selling albums for Decca Classics and received multiple Grammy nominations. Julia has performed as a soloist with leading orchestras around the world and is a regular guest at international festivals.

Emanuel Ax is one of the most revered pianists of our time. He has won seven Grammy Awards, including two for Best Classical Album. Emanuel has appeared as a soloist with every major orchestra in America and his recordings have been honored with many of the industry’s top awards.

Yo-Yo Ma is perhaps the most famous cellist in the world. He has won 19 Grammy Awards, including two for Best Classical Album. Yo-Yo has performed for heads of state, royalty, and dignitaries around the globe. He is also a dedicated advocate for music education and works to bring music to underserved communities.

John Adams is one of America’s leading composers. His opera Nixon in China was named one of the top ten works of the 20th century by Opera News. John has been awarded numerous honors, including the Pulitzer Prize for Music and multiple Grammy Awards. He currently serves as Composer-in-Residence at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The Most Requested Classical Pieces

Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D
One of the most popular concerti ever written, this work for four soloists and string orchestra was composed by Bach in the early 1700s, during his tenure as court musician in Cöthen. The first half of the piece features lively exchanges between the soloists; the opening trumpet fanfare recurs throughout, providing unity. The second half is a gorgeous slow movement for violin and harpsichord.

Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C Minor
Arguably one of the most popular pieces of classical music ever written, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is known for its famous four-note opening motif, which reappears in various guises throughout the work. First performed in 1808, the symphony is scored for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, timpani and strings.

Mozart: Clarinet Concerto in A Major
This concerto was written in 1791 for Mozart’s friend Anton Stadler, a clarinetist who was particularly skilled at playing operations requiring circular breathing (a technique that allows a player to sustain a long note without pausing for breath). The work consists of three movements: Allegro moderato; Adagio; Rondo: Allegro.
