This was a great year for electronic music. In fact, it might have been the best year ever. There were so many great tracks, it was hard to narrow it down to just 50. But we did it. And here they are: the 50 best electronic songs of 2014.

Best Albums of 2014

The year 2014 was a great year for electronic music. A lot of different artists released some great music this year. Here are some of the best albums of 2014.

Aphex Twin – Syro

The eleventh studio album by electronic music pioneer Aphex Twin, Syro was released to much critical acclaim in 2014. Ranked by many critics as one of the best albums of the year, Syro is a complex and experimental work that demonstrates Aphex Twin’s continued mastery of electronic music. With complex rhythms and intricate sound design, Syro is a must-listen for fans of electronic music.

Boards of Canada – Tomorrow’s Harvest

The highly anticipated new album from Scottish electronic duo Boards of Canada, Tomorrow’s Harvest, was released in June to critical acclaim. The album debuted at #1 on the UK Albums Chart and garnered rave reviews from many publications, including Pitchfork, NME, and The Guardian.

Tomorrow’s Harvest is a beautifully composed and meticulously produced work that represents the best of what Boards of Canada do. The album is a perfect blend of the duo’s signature IDM sound with elements of classic electronica, ambient, and even a hint of industrial music. Whether you’re a longtime fan or just getting into Boards of Canada, Tomorrow’s Harvest is an essential listen.

Burial – Rival Dealer

Burial’s three-track EP Rival Dealer is a departure from the dubstep producer’s previous work. The first track, “Rival Dealer,” is a dark and atmospheric number that wouldn’t be out of place on one of Burial’s full-length albums. The second track, “Hiders,” is a more traditional dubstep track, with skittering beats and a deep bass line. The final track, “Come Down to Us,” is a techno track with a thumping bass line and trance-like synths.

Best Tracks of 2014

It’s that time of year again where we take a look back at the past twelve months and reflect on the best that the year had to offer. This year was no different, with some amazing tracks gracing our ears. Here are our picks for the best tracks of 2014.

Burial – Rival Dealer

Burial’s first release in two years, Rival Dealer, is a three-track EP that sees the famed producer experiments with a more direct and emotive approach to songwriting. While past Burial releases have been defined by their atmospheric haziness, Rival Dealer is built around three distinct and immediate vocal tracks. The title track features a sampled monologue about love and loss delivered with raw emotion, while “Hiders” and “Come Down to Us” both make use of catchy female vocals that provide a welcome pop sensibility to Burial’s typically murky soundscape. musically, the EP is marked by its low-end heft, with sub-bass frequencies rumbling beneath throbbing 4/4 beats on all three tracks. It’s a exhilarating return to form from one of electronic music’s most respected and innovative producers.
