Hip hop music is a genre of popular music that developed in the United States in the 1970s. It consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include sampling (or synthesizing) beats or basslines from records, and beatboxing.

Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar’s “Damn.” is still going strong, holding onto the top spot on the Rap Albums chart for the fourth straight week. Elsewhere in the hip hop world, Lil Yachty and Quavo of Migos are being sued for allegedly stealing a beat, and Remy Ma is set to release a diss track aimed at Nicki Minaj.

Mixtapes

Lil Tecca’s mixtape, “We Love You Tecca,” is a collection of 14 songs that were all written and produced by the 19-year-old rapper. Cuban Doll’s mixtape, “Aaliyah Keef,” features the rapper Payday 2 over instrumentals from the late Aaliyah. Joji’s “Nectar” is a 17-track mixtape that includes features from Diplo, prosperity, and Rich Brian.
