In 1979, when Enrique was four years old, his parents divorced after nearly a decade of marriage. His father went on to become one of the most well-known and successful singer-songwriters in Latin music history, while his mother eventually remarried Spanish journalist Miguel Boyer. Three years later, Enrique and his two older siblings—sister Chabeli and brother Julio—appeared in their father’s music video for the song “A flor de piel.”

Enrique’s godmother is legendary actress Sofia Loren. When he was a child, Enrique lived in Miami with his mother and siblings, but he spent every summer with his father in Spain. His first album

Enrique Miguel Iglesias Preysler was born in Madrid, Spain, on May 8, 1975, the son of Spanish superstar Julio Iglesias and Filipina socialite and magazine journalist Isabel Preysler. Enrique was two years old when his parents divorced, at which time he and his older brother Julio Jr. went to live in Miami with their father. Growing up in a household full of music and featuring two superstar parents didn’t prove easy for young Enrique. His father’s success as a singer made it hard for Enrique to find his own identity, especially considering that he looked just like his father. As he told Billboard magazine in 1999: “I thought: ‘How am I going to top that?'”

So instead of trying to follow in Julio Sr.’s footsteps as a singer, Enrique went the other way and started playing the drums when he was eight years old. It wasn’t until he was a teenager that he began to show signs of musical talent himself, when he started writing songs—in English, not Spanish—and singing them in Miami nightclubs. In 1995 he finally decided to record an album, using the stage name Enrique. The self-titled debut album was released in November of that year and quickly became a hit in several countries, including the United States
