KPOP, or Korean pop music, is a genre of popular music originating in South Korea. While the term “K-pop” originally referred to music released in South Korea, it is now used more broadly to refer to any pop music from any Korean-speaking country. K-pop is often characterized by a strong use of synthesizers, catchy melodies, and a wide range of genres.
BTS
BTS, also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a seven-member South Korean boy band formed by Big Hit Entertainment. The name subsequently became a backronym for Beyond the Scene in July 2017. On June 12, 2013, they performed the song “No More Dream” from their initial album 2 Cool 4 Skool to commemorate their debut on June 13, 2013. They won several New Artist of the Year awards for the track, including at the 2013 Melon Music Awards and Golden Disc Awards and the 2014 Seoul Music Awards. BTS continued rising to widespread prominence with their The Most Beautiful Moment in Life trilogy, with The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 and Part 2 topping Billboard’s World Albums chart in 2015 and 2016 respectively. TheMost Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever went on to win the Album of the Year award at the 2016 Melon Music Awards.
BTS made history as the first K-pop act to receive a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their single “Mic Drop”, making them the first Korean group to earn a gold certification from the organization. Their subsequent singles “DNA” and “Fake Love” also received certifications from RIAA respectively. In May 2019, BTS became the first act since Metallica in 1996 to top Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs radio airplay chart with their English-language single “Boy with Luv”. In October 2018, BTS became only one of two Korean artists to top both Billboard’s Digital Songs chart and main singles chart with two consecutive number one hits after Psy reached number one on both charts in April 2013 with his viral hit song “Gangnam Style”. On May 21, 2019 they became one of 15 artists to have three number-one albums within twelve months on Billboard 200 since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking sales for that specific week ending date in May 1991 as well as becoming only one of six artists ever (and second Korean artist after Psy) to have three albums reach number one within a calendar year on that specific chart after they topped that particular US music ranking system again with Map of the Soul: Persona. Blackpink
Blackpink is a South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment, consisting of members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. The group debuted on August 8, 2016, with their single Square One, which spawned hits “Whistle” and “Boombayah”. They became the first female K-pop group to have four number-one singles on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart. Their 2019 single “Kill This Love” broke the record for the biggest 24-hour YouTube premiere in history. As of 2020, Blackpink is the highest-charting female K-pop act on both Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200, peaking at number 41 with “Sour Candy”.
The group has also achieved commercial success in other countries. In 2018, they became the first ever all-female K-pop group to play Coachella. Later that year they embarkes on their first worldwide concert tour Blackpink Arena Tour 2018. And in 2019, they became the first female K-pop group to perform at festival Glastonbury and have a stadium show in Hyde Park as part of British Summer Time Hyde Park.
