The advent of World War II led to a marked increase in the popularity of pop music, as people sought out light-hearted entertainment to relieve the stresses of wartime life. Big bands such as Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey became hugely popular, and their records were played on Armed Forces Radio stations all over the world. It has a focus on commercial recording, often oriented towards a youth market, as well as that of the Singles Chart usually through the medium of relatively short and simple love songs.
