Let’s Talk About Pop Music is a blog devoted to discussing all things pop music! From the latest hits to deep dives into your favorite artists’ discographies, we’ll talk about it all!

Introduction

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid-1950s. The terms “popular music” and “pop music” are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many different styles. Pop music is eclectic, and often borrows elements from other styles such as urban, dance, rock, Latin, and country. Identifying factors include generally short to medium-length songs written in a basic format (often the verse-chorus structure), as well as common use of repeated choruses, melodic tunes, and hooks.

The Good

There’s no denying that pop music is catchy, easy to listen to, and can make you feel good. It’s the kind of music that you can listen to no matter what mood you’re in and it always puts a smile on your face. Pop music is also great for dancing and singing along to.

The Catchy Melodies

Sure, the words might not be saying much, but there’s no denying the fact that a good pop song will stick in your head for days. Why is that? Most of the time, it’s because of the catchy melody. Pop melodies are designed to be memorable and easy to sing along to. This hook is what draws listeners in and keeps them coming back for more.

The Fun Lyrics

Most people think that Pop lyrics are all about love, but that’s not always the case. Some of the most popular Pop songs have clever, funny, or even dark lyrics. Below are some examples of these types of songs.

“I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor
This song is an anthem for anyone who has ever gone through a break-up. The lyrics are empowering and uplifting, but also have a sense of humor.

“Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves
This song is an undeniable feel-good tune. The lyrics are happy and carefree, making it the perfect pick-me-up song.

“Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)” by Pink Floyd
This song is a classic example of a dark Pop song. The lyrics are about conformity and the struggles of growing up.

The Bad

Pop music has been around for a long time, and it’s not going anywhere. It’s catchy, easy to listen to, and usually has a good beat. However, there is a downside to pop music. Let’s take a look at some of the negatives of pop music.

The Repetitive Choruses

There’s nothing wrong with a good sing-along song. In fact, some of the most popular and well-loved songs are the ones that are easy to sing along to. But there’s a difference between a catchy chorus that you can’t get out of your head and a repetitive chorus that feels like it’s being hammered into your brain.

The latter is becoming more and more common in pop music, and it’s starting to wear on our collective sanity. It’s not just the lyrics that are becoming more repetitive, either. The melodies are starting to sound the same, too.

It’s not that all repetition is bad. In fact, repetition can be used to good effect in music. But when it’s used over and over and over again, it starts to feel like we’re being beaten over the head with a hammer. We get it, you want us to remember the chorus so we’ll buy your single or download your album. But there’s a point where enough is enough.

If you’re looking for proof that repetitive choruses are becoming more common, just take a look at the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The vast majority of songs that make it onto the chart these days have choruses that are so catchy they might as well be drilling into our skulls. And don’t even get us started on the hooks in EDM songs. They’re basically just repeated words or phrases set to a thumping beat.

We’re not saying that all pop songs these days are bad because of their repetitive choruses. But it is something that we’ve noticed and it is starting to become a bit of a problem. Maybe we’re just getting old and grumpy, but we miss the days when pop songs had more interesting lyrical content and melodies that weren’t quite so…monotonous.

The Lack of Variety

In recent years, there has been a growing trend of pop music becoming increasingly homogenized. This lack of diversity can be seen in both the genres being represented and the artists themselves.

For example, within the last five years, the majority of chart-topping songs have been either EDM/dance or hip-hop/R&B. While these are both popular genres, it leaves little room for other types of music to break through. In addition, many of the artists making this music are either white or black. This again shows a lack of diversity, as there are plenty of talented musicians from other racial backgrounds who are being overlooked.

The lack of variety in pop music is problematic for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it creates a musical monoculture that can be quite boring. It also limits people’s exposure to different types of music and restricts artistic creativity. Hopefully this trend will begin to change in the coming years and we’ll see a more diverse range of artists and genres being represented in the mainstream.

Conclusion

To sum up, pop music is a genre of music that is enjoyed by people of all ages and from all walks of life. It is a genre that is constantly evolving, with new artists and new sounds emerging all the time. Whether you’re a fan of the old-school sounds of the Beatles or you’re more into the latest hits from Justin Bieber, there’s no doubt that pop music is here to stay. Thanks for reading!
