It’s October, which means a fresh crop of hip hop music to start the month off right. Here are some of the newest releases from your favorite artists. Make sure to check them out and add them to your playlist.

A$AP Rocky – Long. Live. A$AP

A$AP Rocky’s debut album, Long. Live. A$AP, was released on January 15, 2013. The album features guest appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Joey Badass, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson and many others. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 139,000 copies in its first week.

Kendrick Lamar – good kid, m.A.A.d city

On October 22, Kendrick Lamar released his major label debut studio album good kid, m.A.A.d city, under Top Dawg, Aftermath, and Interscope Records. The album was preceded by the release of five singles; “The Recipe” featuring Dr. Dre, “Swimming Pools (Drank)”, “Poetic Justice” featuring Drake, “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe”, and “Alright”. good kid, m.A.A.d city received widespread acclaim from critics, who praised its themes and Lamar’s lyrical ability.

The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 241,000 copies in its first week of release. It became Lamar’s highest-charting album in the US and despite not reaching number one it was nonetheless ranked as one of the year-end best albums of 2012 by many publications including USA Today and Entertainment Weekly whom both ranked it second on their lists; Pitchfork Media placed it at number five on their Best Albums list and XXL ranked it third on their list. good kid, m.A.A.d city has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Mac Miller – Watching Movies with the Sound Off

Mac Miller’s sophomore album, Watching Movies with the Sound Off, was released on June 18, 2013 by Rostrum Records. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, selling 102,000 copies in its first week. It is Miller’s highest charting album to date. The album features guest appearances from Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler, the Creator, Ab-Soul, Action Bronson and Schoolboy Q.

Critical reception for Watching Movies with the Sound Off has been positive. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 71, which indicates “generally favorable reviews”, based on 22 reviews. Steve Juon of RapReviews gave the album a perfect score of 10 out of 10 and called it “an easy candidate for rap album of the year.” Rollie Pemberton of NOW stated: “With his latest release [Mac Miller] has made a significant artistic leap.”

One of the most anticipated mixtapes of the year, Schoolboy Q’s Habits & Contradictions did not disappoint. The TDE artist showcased his growth as an MC, touching on a variety of topics with his signature sense of humor. The tape also featured a number of impressive guest appearances, including Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock.

Lil Wayne – Dedication 4

Lil Wayne’s Dedication 4 is one of the most notable mixtapes of October 2012. The mixtape features Lil Wayne rapping over some of the biggest hits of the past year, including “The Motto” by Drake, “I’m on One” by DJ Khaled, and “She Will” by Rick Ross. Dedication 4 is sure to please fans of Lil Wayne and hip hop music alike.

J. Cole – Born Sinner

On January 28, 2013, J. Cole released his second studio album Born Sinner. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, selling 296,000 copies in its first week. It was Cole’s highest-charting album on the billboard, until it was surpassed by his third album 2014 Forest Hills Drive, when it debuted at number one. The album was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards.

Wale – The Gifted

Wale’s third studio album, The Gifted, is scheduled to be released on May 27, 2013, by Maybach Music Group and Interscope Records. The album’s lead single “Bad” featuring Tiara Thomas, was released on February 11, 2013. Wale will embark on a nationwide tour in support of the album alongside label mate Meek Mill, with Toronto rapper Drake appearing as a guest performer for the sixth show of the tour in his native Canada.

Kid Cudi – Indicud

Kid Cudi’s third studio album, Indicud, is set to be released on April 23, 2013. The album’s first single, “Just What I Am”, was released on October 2, 2012. The second single, “King Wizard”, was released on November 26, 2012.
