It’s been a strong year for Hip Hop music and Toonami has had some great tracks to feature. trap, R&B, and of course, Hip Hop, have all been well represented this year. Here are what we think are the best Hip Hop tracks of 2019.
“Savage” by Megan Thee Stallion
“Savage” is a song by American rapper Megan Thee Stallion featuring American singer Beyoncé. It was released on April 29, 2020, through 1501 Certified Entertainment and 300 Entertainment, as the lead single from Megan Thee Stallion’s extended play Suga. “Savage” went on to peak at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100—marking Megan Thee Stallion’s and Beyoncé’s first number-one single in the United States—making it the first song by two female rappers to do so. The song received a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.
“BOP” by DaBaby
DaBaby’s “BOP” might just be the song of the summer. It’s got a catchy hook, a great beat, and it’s impossible to not bop your head along to it. “Racks in the Middle” is a song by American rapper Nipsey Hussle featuring vocals from Roddy Ricch and Hit-Boy. It was released on February 13, 2019, as the lead single from Hussle’s posthumous album Victory Lap (2018). The song peaked at number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Hussle announced the release of the song on February 11, 2019, tweeting “TONIGHT!!!” along with its artwork. It was released on all digital streaming platforms at midnight EST on February 13. The song was part of Hussle’s final project before his death, his debut album Victory Lap. The album was originally supposed to be released on February 16, 2018, but was pushed back due to sample clearance issues. “Racks in the Middle” was previously leaked online in June 2018.
“Racks in the Middle” is atrap songwith a length of three minutes and fifty-nine seconds. The song is produced by Hit-Boy, who also produced Hussle’s previous single “One Take”. The track features additional production from Mike & Keys and Mars of 1500 or Nothin’.
The song also features vocals from fellow American rapper Roddy Ricch. In an interview with Zane Lowe for Beats 1 Radio on Apple Music, Hit-Boy spoke about the recording process for “Racks in the Middle”, saying:
“‘Racks in the Middle’ is actually one of them songs that Nip kinda already had an idea of what he wanted to do with it… So we just went in and we just vibed out and then we came up with that hook and then he started going crazy…”
