The Phantom of the Opera: The Story
The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909, to January 8, 1910. The novel was published in volume form in late March 1910 by Pierre Lafitte and quickly became a bestseller.
The novel tells the story of a young soprano named Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a phantom living in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House. The phantom, known only as “the Opera ghost” or “the Phantom”, terrorizes the opera company and overrides their decisions out of spite, until he falls in love with Christine and abducts her.
The novel has been adapted into various media, including film adaptations, stage musicals, television series and an anime series.
The Phantom of the Opera: The Characters
The Phantom of the Opera features a host of colorful characters. Some have been in the novel and previous incarnations of the story, while others are unique to this newer version.
-The Phantom: The Phantom is a deformed man who lives in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House. He is a musical genius and has a love for Christine, an Opera singer.
-Christine: Christine is a young, naïve singer at the Paris Opera House. She is the object of the Phantom’s affections and he manipulates her career in order to make her a star.
-Raoul: Raoul is Christine’s childhood friend and the Vicomte de Chagny. He is in love with Christine and works to protect her from the Phantom.
-Madame Giry: Madame Giry is a former ballet dancer at the Paris Opera House who now works as an aide to the Phantom. She is fiercely loyal to him and helps him carry out his plan for Christine.
-Meg Giry: Meg is Madame Giry’s daughter and a ballet dancer at the Paris Opera House. She also has some loyalty to the Phantom, but not to the same extent as her mother.
The Phantom of the Opera: The Music
The Phantom of the Opera: The Music is a 1989 piano music album based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical The Phantom of the Opera. It was released on compact disc by Decca Records on 21 November 1989 in the United Kingdom and 3 April 1990 in the United States. The album contains all of the musical numbers from The Phantom of the Opera, arranged for piano by Sarah Westgarth.Most of the tracks are performed by Geraldine McEwan, with some sung by Ian Richardson and Michael York.
The album was released as a part of Decca’s “Original Cast Series”, which features music from popular musical theatre productions. The Phantom of the Opera: The Music was well-received upon its release and peaked at number one on the UK Classical Albums Chart, where it remained for fourteen weeks. In 1991, it was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for shipments of 300,000 copies in the UK.

The lyrics for “The Phantom of the Opera” were written by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe, and the music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The Phantom of the Opera: The Broadway Production
The Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera opened on January 26, 1988, at the Majestic Theatre. The production was directed by Harold Prince, with choreography by Gillian Lynne, and starred Michael Crawford as the Phantom and Sarah Brightman as Christine Daaé.
The musical was an instant success, grossing over $4 million in its opening week and becoming Broadway’s longest-running musical at that time. It eventually went on to play for over 13 years, closing on October 10, 1999. The production was revived on Broadway in 2006 for a limited run of 86 performances.
The Phantom of the Opera: The Movie
The movie “The Phantom of the Opera” was released in 2004, and its soundtrack quickly became popular among fans of the film. The movie’s score was composed by esteemed composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the soundtrack features piano music performed by world-renowned pianist Marcelo Grassetti.
