It is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain Georg von Trapp. She introduces the family to a life of music and joy, which ultimately captures the hearts of the Nazis, resulting in their escape to freedom just as the Anschluss is announced.

The show won five Tony Awards including Best Musical; Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Mary Martin); Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical (Richard Haydn); Best Direction of a Musical; and Best Book of a Musical. The first London production opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on May 18, 1961 starring Julie Andrews (who had taken over from Mary Martin during the Broadway run) and Christopher Plummer. The show had Distinguished Production by The League of New York Theatres and Producers; Outstanding Production of the Season; Julie Andrews won Outstanding Personal Achievement in Broadcasting for her live television broadcast performance opposite Christopher Plummer as Captain von Trapp; Jean Louisa Kelly won Most Promising Female Newcomer – Theatregoers’ Choice Award for her role as Liesl; Ben Kingsley won Best Supporting Actor – Theatregoers’ Choice Award for his role as Max Detweiler; Alan Jay Lerner was nominated for Best Lyricist – Theatregoers’ Choice Award for his work on An American Trilogy.
The film version premiered at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on March 2 1965. It starred Julie Andrews (who had played Maria on Broadway) as Maria von Trapp and Christopher Plummer as Captain Georg von Trapp. The film was directed by Robert Wise and produced by Saul Chaplin, Robert Graff Fred Wise which earned them an Academy Award for Best Picture. It also won Oscars for Best Sound Mixing (John Butterworth), Film Editing (William Hines), Music– Original Score (Richard Rodgers), Music– Scoring Of A Dramatic Or Comedy Picture (Irwin Kostal), Music– Adaptation Or Treatment (William Dziemianowicz).
