It is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, the film tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain Georg von Trapp. She convinces him to allow her to stay and teach the children music. After he recognizes her talents, he asks her to marry him.
The film’s sets were designed by Morton Haack and filmed in Salzburg, Austria. The Sound of Music received five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film was also nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards, winning four. In 2001, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

Set against the spectacular mountain vistas of the Austrian Alps and featuring a magnificent score that includes “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” The Sound of Music is an unforgettable experience for all ages.
