Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain Georg von Trapp. He is ordered to accept a commission in Hitler’s navy, but he opposes the Nazis. He and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with their children.
The title of the original Broadway production was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. It opened on November 16, 1959 and closed on June 26, 1963 after 1,443 performances. It was directed by Vincent Jandreau and starred Mary Martin as Maria von Trapp and Theodore Bikel as Captain Georg von Trapp. The Original Broadway Cast Recording won the 1960 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

The Civic Opera House History
The 2,804-seat Civic Opera House is located at 20 N. Wacker Drive in Chicago. The building was designed by architects D.H. Burnham & Co. and completed in November of 1928 at a cost of $4 million. It was the first steel-frame skyscraper in the world to be supported entirely by its internal frame, making it an architectural landmark. The Civic Opera House originally served as the home of the Chicago Civic Opera Company, which went bankrupt in 1932 during the Great Depression. The building sat vacant for eight years until it was purchased by Twentieth Century Fox in 1940 to be used as a movie palace. The film company made $3 million worth of renovations to the building, including adding a huge screen and sound system, and closed it to the public for two years while they filmed seven movies there. In 1946, Fox sold the Civic Opera House to Balaban and Katz—a local theater chain—for $5 million, who then reopened it as a movie theater and concert hall. It continued to operate as such until 1977 when it was again closed due to financial difficulties. In 1981, the Lyric Opera of Chicago purchased the Civic Opera House for $8 million with plans to restore it to its former glory as an opera house. The Lyric Opera has been operating out of the Civic Opera House ever since, putting on more than 300 performances each year
