Carmen Opera Musicians Biographies
Georges Bizet
Georges Bizet was born on October 25, 1838, in Paris, France. He started taking piano and harmony lessons at age seven and soon began to show great promise as a musician. When he was 15, Bizet entered the Paris Conservatory, where he studied under famous composers like Fromental Halévy and Charles Gounod. He won several prestigious awards during his time at the Conservatory, but he always felt like an outsider among his more conservative classmates.
After graduating in 1857, Bizet struggled to find success as a composer. His early operas were met with mixed reviews, and he didn’t achieve real fame until the premiere of Carmen in 1875. Unfortunately, Bizet didn’t live to see the opera’s success; he died of a heart attack just three months after its premiere. Carmen went on to become one of the most popular operas of all time, and its music is instantly recognizable even to people who have never seen the opera itself.
Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Málaga, Spain. He was the first child of José Ruiz Blanco, a professor of art at the local art academy, and María Picasso López. From an early age, it was clear that Picasso was a prodigy; he finished his first painting at age nine and had his first exhibition at age 13. In 1895, Picasso’s family moved to Barcelona so that he could study at the city’s renowned art academy.
Picasso didn’t stay at the academy for long; he dropped out after just one year and moved to Paris in 1904. There he met other artists who would later become famous in their own right, like Georges Braque and Henri Matisse. Together they pioneered a new style of painting known as Cubism. Picasso continued to experiment with new styles throughout his long career; in addition to Cubism, he is associated with Surrealism, Neoclassicism, and Expressionism. He is widely considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
