What is the Crested Butte Music Festival?

The Crested Butte Music Festival is an annual summer music festival held in Crested Butte, Colorado. The Festival offers a wide range of musical programming, from opera to bluegrass, and attracts audiences from all over the country. What is opera?

Opera is a musical art form in which the human voice is the primary instrument. The word opera is from the Italian word for “work.” Opera is also a theatrical art form, usually in spoken dialogue with musical accompaniment, that tells a story or presents an emotional drama. It usually has orchestral, choral, or solo vocal music, often combined with stage action and scenery.

What is the audition process like?

All applicants will be asked to submit a resume, headshot, and musical resume. In addition, please prepare two arias, one in English and one in a foreign language. An accompanist will be provided, however you may bring your own if you prefer.

You will be asked to sight-read a short excerpt from the score and may also be asked to participate in a brief vocal quality and range assessment.

We recommend that you wear comfortable clothing and shoes as you may be asked to move about during your audition.

What are the judges looking for?

In order to become a successful opera singer, you need to have a good understanding of what the judges are looking for in an audition. Of course, you also need to have a strong singing voice and stage presence. But if you don’t know what the judges are specifically looking for, you won’t be able to show them your best.

Here are some things that the judges will be looking for during opera auditions:

-Vocal quality: The judges will be listening for a clear, strong singing voice with good tone and pitch. They will also be listening for vocal expressiveness and range.
-Stage presence: The judges will be looking for performers who are comfortable on stage and who can engage with the audience. They should also be able to project their voices well and move around the stage with ease.
-Singing style: Opera is a very stylized form of singing, so the judges will be looking for singers who can demonstrate their understanding of the style. This includes being able to sing both fast and slow passages with control, as well as being able to use vibrato appropriately.
-Musicality: The judges will be looking for singers who have a good understanding of music theory and can sight-read music well. They should also be able to play an instrument (piano or guitar) or hold their own in an a cappella group.
-Language skills: Many operas are sung in foreign languages, so the judges will be looking for singers who can demonstrate their language skills. This includes being able to pronounce words correctly and having a good understanding of grammar and vocabulary.

Conclusion

The Crested Butte Music Festival Opera program provides an excellent opportunity for young singers. The program is designed to give participants the opportunity to refine their skills while also providing them with exposure to a variety of new experiences. The program is an intense, but very rewarding experience.

What are the benefits of auditioning for the Crested Butte Music Festival?

Auditions for CBMF are open to all opera singers who are at least 18 years old. There is no fee to audition.

CBMF Opera General Director James Robinson believes that the benefits of auditioning for the CBMF far outweigh the cost: “Opera is an expensive art form, and productions can often cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
