The Met

“Carmen”

“Carmen” is one of the most popular operas in the world, and it’s coming to The Met! This timeless tale of love and betrayal is set in Seville, Spain, and features some of the most iconic music in all of opera. Don’t miss your chance to see this classic performed live on The Met stage.

“Don Giovanni”

Don Giovanni is an opera in two acts with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. It is based on the legends of Don Juan, a fictional libertine and seducer. It was premiered by the Prague Italian opera at the National Theater, now called the Estates Theatre, on October 29, 1787. Da Ponte’s libretto was billed as a tragedy, though it retains elements of comedy.

Don Giovanni follows its protagonist, Juan (Don Giovanni in Italian), from his successful conquest of Donna Anna to his final damnation for his many crimes. The opera is structured as a series of episodes in which each act culminates in an astonishing moment, often bloody or violent in nature, that serves to relocate the action and inject new momentum. Although usually described as comic, Don Giovanni certainly contains some tragic elements: it deals with figures larger than life who are ultimately destroyed by their own appetites and passions.

“La Bohème”

“La Bohème” is an opera in four acts, composed by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on Scènes de la vie de Bohème by Henri Murger. The work, originally intended for the budding Verismo movement, is one of the most frequently performed operas and was called “the greatest triumph achieved by any artist in our day” by Toscanini.

The story is set in Paris around 1830, follows the lives of a group of young bohemian artists and their love affairs. The main characters are Mimì, a seamstress; Rodolfo, a poet; Marcello, a painter; Musetta, a singer; Colline, a philosopher; and Schaunard, a musician. The opera’s original title given to it by its librettists was “La bohème”; however published scores of the work have always used the Italian form “La Bohème” throughout.

Puccini began composing “La Bohème” in 1893. He finished the orchestral parts in 1896 but had difficulty finding a publisher for the piece until 1898 when Ricordi finally accepted it. After its successful premiere at La Scala on February 1, 1896 under Arturo Toscanini (in his operatic debut), “La Bohème” quickly became part of the standard repertoire worldwide. Puccini wrote five further versions of the opera: two for American houses (1902 and 1918); one for French audiences (1903); and two for early 20th-century Italian repertory (1904 and 1909).
