Carmen is an opera in four acts by French composer Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on a novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée. The opera was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 3 March 1875, but its popularity declined in the years after Bizet’s death. In the twentieth century, it became one of the most frequently performed operas; Carmen has been performed over 500 times at the Metropolitan Opera alone.

This timeless opera tells the story of the free-spirited Carmen, who works in a cigarette factory and quickly becomes one of the most popular girls there. She also becomes the object of DESIRE for Don José, a dashing corporal in the Spanish army. When Carmen grows tired of him, she sets her sights on Escamillo, a bullfighter who is also very popular with the ladies. A jealous rage ignites in Don José and leads to his tragic downfall.

She tells fortunes, smokes cigars, and loves freely. Her wild spirit leads her to make a bet with a young soldier named Don José. The bet is for a flower, but it comes with a price. Carmen will not be controlled and she will not be denied. This passionate opera is filled with memorable music, including the Habanera, “Love is a rebellious bird” and the Toreador Song, “Votre toast, je peux vous le rendre.”
