Who is Il Signor Bruschino?
Il Signor Bruschino is a fictitious character created by Gioachino Rossini for his 1813 opera buffa TheItalian Girl in Algiers. Rossini reused the character’s name and basic story line nineteen years later in his 1832 opera buffa The Barber of Seville.
Bruschino Sr. was written as an old man, but in The Barber of Seville, the character is changed to Bruschino Jr., a young man who impersonates his father in order to woo the young Rosina.
While the characters and their plots are entirely Rossini’s invention, the names “Bruschino” and “Bruschini” were common enough in Italian comedies of the time that they would have been familiar to contemporary audiences.
