The Marriage of Figaro

The Marriage of Figaro is an opera buffa (comic opera) composed in 1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with an Italian libretto written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The work is based on a stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais, La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro, first performed in 1784. It was Mozart’s first mature comic opera.

The Plot

The Marriage of Figaro is a comedy in five acts, composed in 1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with a libretto written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The libretto was based on a stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais, La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro, first performed in 1784.

The opera follows a day in the life of Figaro, a servant to the Count Almaviva. The story begins with Troublemaker Figaro being summoned by his mistress Rosine, the Countess Almaviva, to deal with her husband’s impending decision to assert an old-fashioned right to sleep with any servant girl on her wedding night.

Figaro is also due to be married himself that evening and is not best pleased at this notion. However, he agrees to help his mistress. Together they hatch a plan which will teach the Count a lesson and allow all three of them to live happily ever after!

The Music

There are some operas that are defined by a single aria, and for many people, The Marriage of Figaro is that opera. “The Countess’s aria” (‘Dove sono i bei momenti’) is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, and it has been popularised by many performers over the years.

Theplot of The Marriage of Figaro is based on a play by Pierre Beaumarchais, which in turn was based on a short story by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The music was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with the libretto (the opera’s story) written by Lorenzo da Ponte.

The opera is set in Seville, Spain, in the 18th century. The story follows the adventures of Figaro, a barber, and his wife Susanna as they try to outwit the lecherous advances of Count Almaviva. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities for Mozart to show off his mastery of comic timing and create some beautiful music.

Oneof the things that makes The Marriage of Figaro so special is the way that Mozart uses the music to further the plot and intensify the emotions of the characters. In particular, “The Countess’s aria” is used to great effect in the final act as Susanna contemplates her love forFigaro and decides to forgive him for his infidelity.

If you’re new to opera, or if you’re just looking for an excuse to listen to some beautiful music, then we recommend giving The Marriage of Figaro a try. You won’t be disappointed!
