A New Hope

One of the best things about the original Star Wars trilogy is the score. From the very first notes of “A New Hope” to the last chord of “Return of the Jedi”, John Williams’ music is an integral part of what makes these movies so great. Here are some of the best instrumental pieces from the Star Wars saga.

“A New Hope”
The main theme from “A New Hope” is one of the most iconic pieces of movie music ever written. It’s instantly recognizable, and it perfectly captures the spirit of adventure and wonder that permeates the entire trilogy. This theme appears throughout all three movies, in both its original form and in various variations.

“The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme)”
This is one underappreciated gem from “The Empire Strikes Back”. It’s a wonderfully dark and menacing piece of music, and it perfectly conveys the feeling of dread that Darth Vader evokes. It’s also one of the few pieces of Star Wars music that isn’t directly associated with a specific character or scene; instead, it reflects an abstract concept (the evil empire).

“Yoda’s Theme”
This piece first appears in “The Empire Strikes Back”, during Luke’s training on Dagobah. It’s a beautiful, ethereal melody that conveys a sense of wisdom and mystery. It reappears several times throughout the trilogy, most notably in “Return of the Jedi”, when Luke confronts Darth Vader for the final time.

“The Battle of Hoth”
This is another great piece from “The Empire Strikes Back”. It captures the feeling of a massive battle taking place in a cold, hostile environment. The use of percussion creates a sense of urgency and excitement, and the climax is simply thrilling. This piece also features one of my favorite uses of leitmotif in any movie score; at around 2:20, you can hear a fragment of Luke’s theme (from “A New Hope”) being played on brass instruments.

The Empire Strikes Back

Few movie scores have had the lasting impact of John Williams’ work on the Star Wars franchise. From the iconic main theme to the stirring anthems of the rebels and the Empire, Williams’ music has become inextricably linked with George Lucas’ saga. In celebration of Williams’ upcoming 85th birthday, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite instrumental pieces from his work on the Star Wars movies.

“The Imperial March” is one of the most instantly recognizable pieces of movie music ever written, and it perfectly captures the might and menace of Darth Vader and the Empire. The theme reappears several times throughout The Empire Strikes Back, including this stirring rendition during Luke’s confrontation with Vader.

“Yoda’s Theme” is a simple but beautiful melody that first appears in The Empire Strikes Back as Luke begins his training with Yoda on Dagobah. It returns in Return of the Jedi during Luke’s emotional goodbye to his dying mentor.

The “Main Theme” is, of course, one of the most famous pieces of movie music ever written. It appears several times throughout Williams’ score for A New Hope, including this rousing rendition during the attack on the Death Star.

Return of the Jedi

The Return of the Jedi is an instrumental piece composed by John Williams for the soundtrack of the 1983 film Return of the Jedi. It is one of the most popular Star Wars tracks, and has been featured in many subsequent Star Wars works.

The piece features a number of themes from throughout the film, including Luke Skywalker’s theme, “Yoda’s Theme”, and the “Rebel Fanfare”. The main theme from A New Hope, “Luke’s Theme”, also makes a brief appearance. The track culminates in a grand finale featuring all of the major themes from the film.

The Phantom Menace

The Phantom Menace is the first film in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, released on May 19, 1999. The film was written and directed by George Lucas, produced by Rick McCallum, and stars Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, and Ian McDiarmid.

The Phantom Menace was released to mixed reviews from critics. However, it was a financial success, grossing over $924 million worldwide.

Attack of the Clones

The music of Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones was composed and conducted by John Williams and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. The score was released on May 7, 2002.

The film features several themes that reappear throughout the score, including “Across the Stars”, a love theme for Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala; “Zam the Assassin”, a action theme for Zam Wesell; “Yoda’s Theme”, a heroic theme for Yoda; and “Jedi Steps and Finale”, a triumphant finale featuring all the major themes from the film.

Revenge of the Sith

-Kylo Ren Arrives: This piece plays when Kylo Ren first appears on screen. It’s a very dark and menacing theme that gives you a sense of foreboding about what he is capable of.
