SEO Basics

I have been blogging on and off since 2008. I have tried a lot of different techniques over the years to try and drive traffic to my blog. I have written about SEO in the past, but I wanted to do a more comprehensive post about the basics of SEO for bloggers. Whether you are a new or experienced blogger, hopefully this post will be helpful for you.

Set up GSC and Bing Webmaster tools

If you want to track your website’s progress in the search engines, you’ll need to set up Google Search Console (GSC) and Bing Webmaster tools. These two platforms will give you insights into how your site is performing, what keywords people are using to find it, and how many people are visiting it.

To set up GSC, go to the Google Search Console website and sign in with your Google account. Once you’re logged in, click on the “Add a property” button and enter your website’s URL. You’ll then need to verify that you own the website – this can be done by adding a meta tag to your site’s home page, uploading an HTML file, or connecting your site to your Google Analytics account.

To set up Bing Webmaster tools, go to the Bing Webmaster tools website and sign in with your Microsoft account. Once you’re logged in, click on the “Add a Site” button and enter your website’s URL. You’ll then need to verify that you own the website – this can be done by adding a meta tag to your site’s home page or uploading an HTML file.

Set up Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free tool that website owners can use to collect data about their site visitors. This data can be used to improve the user experience on the site and to make marketing decisions.

To set up Google Analytics, you will need to create a Google account and then add the code provided by Google to your website.

Install and configure an SEO plugin (wordpress)

After you’ve installed WordPress and chosen a theme, the next thing you’ll want to do is install a plugin to help with your site’s SEO. One popular option is the Yoast SEO plugin.

Here’s how to install and set up Yoast SEO on your WordPress site:

1. Go to the plugins page in your WordPress dashboard and search for “Yoast SEO.”
2. Install and activate the Yoast SEO plugin.
3. Go to the Yoast SEO settings page and configure the plugin according to your preferences.
4. That’s it! You’re now ready to start optimizing your site for better search engine rankings.

Keyword Research

One of the most important things you can do when creating a new blog is to properly research your keywords. You want to make sure that you are choosing keywords that are relevant to your topic, and that people are actually searching for those keywords. Once you have a list of potential keywords, you can start incorporating them into your blog posts.

Identify your competitors

As you begin your keyword research, it’s important to identify your primary competitors. This will help you understand their keywords and search strategies, and give you some ideas of your own. To find your competitors, simply do a Google search for keywords related to your business or website. For example, if you sell new age music, a Google search for “new age music” will return a list of competing websites.

Conduct a keyword gap analysis

Keyword gap analysis is the process of identifying which keywords your competitors are ranking for that you are not. This is important because it allows you to focus your SEO efforts on keywords that you have a chance of ranking for.

To conduct a keyword gap analysis, start by creating a list of all the keywords you are currently ranking for. Then, do a search on Google for each of your competitor’s websites. Look at the results and see which keywords they are ranking for that you are not.

Once you have your list of keywords, it’s time to start working on ranking for them. There are a number of different techniques you can use to improve your rankings, but the most important thing is to make sure that your website is relevant and informative for the keywords you are targeting.

Find your main ‘money’ keywords

When you are looking at the long-tail of a potential keyword, you want to find the main phrases that people are searching for that relate to your topic. These are called “money keywords” because they have commercial intent – people are looking to buy something!

To find these keywords, you can use a tool like Google’s Keyword Planner. Type in some general terms related to your topic and see what comes up. For our example, we’ll use the terms “new age music”:

As you can see, there are a variety of different phrases that people are searching for. Some of these have very high search volume, which means there is a lot of interest in them. These are typically going to be the best keywords to target.

Some tips for choosing your main keywords:
– Look for keywords with high search volume
– Look for keywords that are relevant to your topic
– Look for keywords that have commercial intent (people are looking to buy something!)

Technical SEO

I have been thinking a lot lately about On-Page SEO and what I can do to make my site more visible in the search engines. I have been looking at various articles and books on the subject, and I think I have a pretty good understanding of it.

Leverage “Inspect URL” feature in GSC

The “Inspect URL” feature in Google Search Console (GSC) allows you to check whether a specific URL on your website is valid and indexed by Google. In addition, this feature also allows you to see the latest crawl date and status for the URL in question.

Here’s how you can leverage the “Inspect URL” feature in GSC:

1. Go to the GSC homepage and sign in with your Google account.
2. In the search box at the top of the page, enter the URL you want to check.
3. Click “Inspect.”
4. In the results page that appears, you’ll see information about the URL in question, including the latest crawl date and status.

Ensure your website is mobile-friendly

More people are using their mobile devices to access the internet than ever before. In fact, over 60% of internet traffic is now from mobile devices. This means that if your website is not optimized for mobile, you could be missing out on a huge chunk of your potential audience.

There are a few key things you can do to make sure your website is mobile-friendly:

-Use responsive design: This means that your website will automatically adjust to fit the screen size of the device it is being viewed on.
-Keep your design simple: Too much clutter on a small screen can be overwhelming for users. Stick to the essentials and focus on providing a good user experience.
– Use large font sizes: Small font sizes are hard to read on mobile devices, so make sure your text is large enough to be easily legible.
– Optimize your images: Large images can take a long time to load on a mobile connection, so optimize them for faster loading times.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your website is ready for the mobile age.

Check your site’s loading speed

The loading speed of your website is important for a number of reasons. First, it is a ranking factor for search engines. Google, in particular, has stated that site speed is a factor in their algorithm. In addition, visitors to your site are less likely to stick around if your site takes too long to load. They will simply go to another site that loads faster.

There are a number of ways to improve the loading speed of your site. One is to optimize the images on your site. Make sure that they are not too large and that they are compressed for the web. Another way to improve loading speed is to minify your CSS and JavaScript files. This means reducing the size of the files by removing unnecessary code and whitespace.

You can also use a content delivery network (CDN) to improve loading times. A CDN stores copies of your site on servers around the world so that visitors can access your site from whichever server is closest to them. This can dramatically improve loading times, especially for visitors who are located far away from your primary server.

##Heading: Use keyword-rich titles and descriptions
##Expansion:

One of the most important aspects of on-page SEO is using keyword-rich titles and descriptions. This helps search engines understand what your page is about so that they can index it properly and suggest it to users who are searching for relevant keywords.

Your title should be a brief, accurate description of the page’s contents. It should include one or two main keywords or phrases, and it should be no longer than 60 characters (including spaces). Your description should be even shorter – no more than 155 characters – and again, it should include relevant keywords or phrases. You can include additional information in both the title and description, but make sure that the keywords or phrases come first so that search engines will see them as being relevant to the page’s content.

On-page and Content

Fix duplicate, missing, and truncated title tags

New Age and Instrumental Music at Vnltue.blogspot.com is a site that offers a wide variety of new age and instrumental music. The site has a lot of content, but it is missing some essential title tags. This can cause problems for users who are looking for specific content on the site.

To fix this, you can use a tool like Screaming Frog to find the missing title tags and then add them in manually. You can also use a plugin like Yoast SEO to automatically generate missing title tags for you.

In addition to missing title tags, some of the title tags on the site are duplicates, truncated, or otherwise inaccurate. This can cause confusion for users and make it difficult for them to find the content they’re looking for.

To fix this, you can edit the existing title tags to make sure they’re accurate and unique. You can also use a tool like Yoast SEO to automatically generate missing title tags for you.

Find and fix duplicate or missing meta descriptions

If you want people to click through to your website when it appears in the search results, then you need to write compelling meta descriptions for each page.

A meta description is the brief summary of a web page that appears in the search results. It should be between 150-160 characters long and include your target keyword.

You can check if you have duplicate or missing meta descriptions using a free tool like Screaming Frog. Simply enter your website URL and click start. The software will crawl your website and highlight any pages with duplicate or missing meta descriptions.

Once you know which pages need fixing, simply edit the relevant HTML code to add or update the meta description. If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, you can always hire a web developer to do it for you.

Find and fix multiple H1 tags

On-page and Content – (New Age and Instrumental Music at Vnltue.blogspot.com)

There should only be ONE H1 tag per page. H1 tags are used to indicate the title of the page, so having multiple H1 tags can be confusing for both users and search engines.

To fix this, simply find all instances of H1 tags on your page (there should only be one) and remove all but the first one.

Off-Page SEO

I’ve been experimenting with music a lot lately. I spent some time last year trying to get into the ambient and new age scene, but I could never find anything that really clicked with me. I liked a lot of the music, but it always felt like it was lacking something.

Off-page SEO (also called “off-site SEO”) refers to actions you can take outside of your own website to improve your ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs).

A big part of off-page SEO is building backlinks, which are links from other websites to yours. Backlinks are important because they show search engines that other websites are talking about you, and they can help improve your position in SERP results.

There are a number of ways to build backlinks, but one of the most effective is to analyze your competitor’s link profile. By taking a look at who is linking to your competitors, you can get an idea of who you should be reaching out to for links. Here’s how to do it:

1. Use a tool like Majestic or Moz Open Site Explorer to find the link profile for a competitor’s website.

2. Look at the referring domains to see where the backlinks are coming from. Are there any patterns? Are there any websites that seem particularly relevant to your niche? Make a list of these websites.

3. Now that you have a list of websites that could be good sources of backlinks, it’s time to start reaching out and try to get some links! You can do this by sending emails, leaving comments on blog posts, or even writing guest posts for other websites in your niche.

In order to find link opportunities, it is important that you first understand where your competitors are getting their links from. This process is known as a “link intersect.” By conducting a link intersect, you can find out which directories, websites, and other resources are linking to multiple sites in your industry.

One way to conduct a link intersect is to use a tool like BuzzSumo. Simply enter a competitor’s URL into the search bar, and BuzzSumo will show you all of the websites that are linking to that particular URL.

Another way to conduct a link intersect is to manually search for websites in your industry that are likely to link to multiple sites. For example, if you’re in the travel industry, you might search for “travel blogs” or “travel directories.”

Once you’ve found some websites that are linking to multiple sites in your industry, reach out to them and ask if they would be interested in linking to your site as well.

When a website links to another website and the link goes to a page that doesn’t exist, that’s called a broken link. And when you find these on other websites, you can usually contact the site owner and ask them to link to one of your pages instead. Not only is this good for getting high-quality backlinks, but it also helps improve your website’s user experience (UX) because you’re effectively fixing someone else’s broken website.
