In 1980, a group of Lincoln Park residents concerned about the possible loss of the Old Town School approached Alderman David Orr about finding a new home for the school. Orr was supportive, and with the help of city staff, he was able to secure a vacant lot at 909 W. Armitage Avenue for the school.
The move to Lincoln allowed the Old Town School to continue serving its students and expand its programming. The new location had larger classrooms, a black-box theatre, and an auditorium that could accommodate up to 700 people. In addition, the school began offering classes for children and adults with special needs.
The Present Day
Old Town School of Folk Music is currently the largest non-profit music school in the world, with two campuses in Chicago and one in Denver.
