Looking for a genre of music to get lost in? Look no further than dubstep. This genre of music is characterized by its heavy bass and beats, which make it perfect for dancing or just letting your mind wander.

What is Dubstep?

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London in the late 1990s. It is generally characterized by sparse, syncopated rhythmic patterns with prominent sub-bass frequencies. The style emerged as an offshoot of UK garage, drawing on a lineage of related styles such as 2-step and dub reggae.

In the early 2000s, dubstep began to be increasingly used in UK hardcore techno and drum and bass productions, giving rise to subgenres such as darkcore and neurofunk. By the mid-2000s, elements of dubstep had begun to be incorporated into mainstream pop and electronic dance music.

Since around 2011–2012, dubstep has been considerably influenced by trap music, resulting in the rise of hybrid genres such as future bass and trapstep.

Where did Dubstep come from?

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged in the late 1990s. It is characterized by a sparse, syncopated rhythm with heavy bass and sub-bass lines. The style originated in the United Kingdom and was later exported to other countries.

London

It’s accepted that dubstep was birthed in South London at around the turn of the millennium. You can hear this in the heavy 2-step garage influence on early dubstep tracks, as well as UK garage’s urban, working class roots. London has been a hotbed for electronic music since the acid house scene of the late 1980s, so it makes sense that dubstep would emerge from this already-thriving community.

Bristol

In the late 1990s, a group of Bristol DJs including Peverelist, Joker, Tahiry, Costcutter, Youngsta and Search and Destroy began playing 2-step garage tracks at faster tempos, adding heavy basslines and reverb-drenched soundscapes. These tracks became known as dubplates—custom-pressed CDs or vinyl discs intended for exclusive play by these DJs—and Bristol’s sound began to take shape.

What are the defining characteristics of Dubstep?

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged in the late 1990s. It is characterized by a distinctive wobbly bass sound, and often contains elements of drum and bass, garage, 2-step, and grime.

The Wobble

The wobble is perhaps the most defining characteristic of dubstep. It’s a low frequency, often sub-bass, sound that is frequently used to give dubstep its unique gritty feel. The wobble is achieved by using a low-pass filter to cut off the higher frequencies of a synth or bass line and then using an LFO (low frequency oscillator) to modulate the cutoff frequency. This produces a wobbly, pulsating sound that is further accentuated by adding delay and reverb.

The Drop

The defining characteristic of Dubstep is ‘the drop.’ This refers to the moment in a song when the bass and percussion suddenly become much heavier and more pronounced, and everything else falls away. It’s often accompanied by a sense of euphoria, and it’s this feeling that keeps fans coming back for more.

The drop is usually preceded by a period of build-up, during which the tension mounts and the anticipation grows. When it finally arrives, the relief is palpable – as is the sense of elation that comes with it. This rollercoaster ride of emotions is one of the things that makes Dubstep so addictive, and it’s something that fans just can’t get enough of.
