Best Dubstep Songs
Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London in the late 1990s. It is generally characterized by sparse, syncopated drum and percussion patterns with bass lines that contain prominent sub-bass frequencies. The style emerged as a development of breakbeat hardcore.
The earliest dubstep releases date back to 1998, and were mostly produced by unrecognized artists working outside the mainstream music industry. These early tracks were often dark, atmospheric, and experimental, lacking the pop sensibilities of later commercial dubstep productions. In 2001, this dark style of dubstep was popularized by labels such as Big Apple Records and Tempa, who released a series of now-classic dubstep singles and compilations. Examples of these early tracks include “Citrus” by Oris Jay (1998), “Macabre Unit Dance” by MACV1 (2000), and “Invaders Must Die” by Lost City (2001).
The early 2000s also saw the rise of so-called “nu-skool” or “new school” dubstep producers who incorporated elements of 2-step garage, grime, and drum and bass into their productions. These tracks were often more accessible andsongwriter-friendly than the dark instrumentals that dominated the early years of dubstep. Notable nu-skool producers include Artwork, Joker, and Joe Shades.
In the mid-2000s, dubstep began to achieve mainstream popularity in the UK thanks to seminal releases like Burial’s eponymous 2006 album and Skream’s 2006 single “Midnight Request Line”. In 2007, BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel died suddenly; his radio show had been instrumental in popularizing dubstep to a wider audience. In his memory, London club Fabric held a fundraiser event called FABRICLIVE 37: 8 hours of Fabric featuring 25 emerging dubstep artists; the event was later released as a live album called FABRICLIVE 37: 8 Hours Of Fabric.
In 2009, La Roux’s populist synthpop hit “In for the Kill” was remixed with a harder dubstep sound by Skream; the track became an international hit and helped popularize dubstep beyond its underground roots. That same year saw releases from some of dubstep’s most acclaimed producers: Burial returned with his second album Untrue; Mount Kimbie released their debut LP Crooks & Lovers; Joy Orbison debuted with his EP Hyph Mngo; Flying Lotus released his breakthrough album Los Angeles; Joker released his groundbreaking The Vision EP; and Kode9 & The Spaceape released their debut LP Memory 9.
The 2010s have seen even greater mainstream success for dubstep, with artists like Flux Pavilion, Rusko, Doctor P., Nero, Calvin Harris, Tiësto all incorporating elements of the genre into their music. In 2012, Dubstep Artist Skrillex Won 3 Grammy Awards For His Music. The song “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites” won Best Dance Recording while “Bangarang” earned Best Dance/Electronica Album as well as Best Dance Recording for its title track Skrillex has said he doesn’t like being called a one hit wonder but rather an artist who is expanding what Electronic dance music can be
