The Best of 90s Grunge Music

Grunge music was a major part of the 90s music scene. With bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam leading the way, grunge music was a force to be reckoned with. Grunge music is still popular today and there are many great grunge bands out there. Let’s take a look at some of the best grunge music of the 90s.

Nirvana

Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. The group consisted of vocalist and guitarist Kurt Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl. Nirvana built its reputation towards the end of the 1980s with their first album, Bleach, and attained global success with their second album, Nevermind (1991), which has been considered one of the greatest albums of all time. They became a teaspoon of grunge fashion and exposed many people to alternative rock in the early 1990s.

Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam is one of the most successful grunge bands of all time. Formed in Seattle in 1990, the band’s debut album, Ten, was an instant success, propelled by the popularity of the single “Jeremy.” Pearl Jam went on to release a string of successful albums throughout the 1990s, including Vs. (1993), Vitalogy (1994), and No Code (1996). The band’s popularity waned somewhat in the early 2000s, but they remain one of the most successful and influential grunge bands of all time.

Soundgarden

Formed in 1984 by singer Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto, Soundgarden was one of the seminal bands of the ’90s grunge movement. The band’s signature sound was a dark, heavy mix of metal and punk that drew equally from the roar of Led Zeppelin and the moody atmospherics of Black Sabbath. After releasing their debut album Ultramega OK in 1988, Soundgarden slowly built a following with their mix of raucous energy and ponderous heaviness. With the release of their fourth album, Badmotorfinger, in 1991, Soundgarden broke through to wider audiences with the help of MTV airplay for the singles “Rusty Cage” and “Outshined.” The band reached new heights in 1994 with Superunknown, an album that debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and eventually went platinum five times over. The success of Superunknown was largely due to the popularity of the singles “Spoonman” and “Black Hole Sun,” which won Grammys for Best Metal Performance and Best Hard Rock Performance, respectively.

Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1987 by guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cantrell and original lead vocalist Layne Staley. The initial lineup was rounded out by drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr, who was replaced in 1993 by Mike Inez. While the band has been labelled as heavy metal, grunge and alternative metal, they have also been described as a hard rock band. Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s. The band became known for the vocals of Staley and Cantrell, which were harmonized, with Staley often singing lead melodies and Cantrell providing backing vocals with his gritty voice.

The band’s debut album, Facelift (1990), was a commercial success and was followed by their second album, Dirt (1992), which achieved similar success. Alice in Chains’ third album, Alice in Chains (1995), was released to mixed reviews but debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and went on to be certified quadruple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album featured one of the band’s most successful singles, “Would?”, which peaked at number two on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. A fourth studio album, Black Gives Way to Blue (2009), oversaw a musical change for Alice in Chains; Starr had left during the recording process due to disagreements with Cantrell; Inez took over bass duties on an interim basis before returning full-time; William Duvall joined as co-lead vocalist while layne staley sang lead vocals on four tracks including “Your Decision”

The self-titled album was Alice in Chains’ first release following Staley’s passing. It debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart with sales of 196,000 copies in its first week of release. Although critically acclaimed upon its release Black Gives Way to Blue received mixed reviews from some music critics who found it too similar sounding to their earlier work while others praised it for being a strong comeback effort following Staley’s death.
