Since its inception, the band’s line-up has included Matt Cameron, Dave Krusen, Jeff Ament, Mike McCready, Eddie Vedder, and Stone Gossard.

Matt Cameron became the band’s full-time drummer in 1986 while bassist Ben Shepherd became a permanent replacement for Yamamoto in 1990. Soundgarden was one of the seminal bands of the grunge movement and is credited as one of the main architects of the subgenre. The band’s third studio album,Badmotorfinger (1991), brought them mainstream success due to its singles “Jesus Christ Pose”, “Rusty Cage”, and “Outshined” which gained heavy rotation on MTV.

After touring extensively for two years supporting Badmotorfinger, Soundgarden returned to the studio milestones with Superunknown (1994). Whereas many grunge bands struggled and faded away during the mid-1990s due to drug addiction or suicide, Soundgarden continued its success with the release of Down on the Upside (1996). The album was widely anticipated because of its long gestation period; however, it failed to achieve comparable commercial success to that of Superunknown. In April 1997 Cornell abruptly left Soundgarden and pursued a solo career due to intolerance towards working with Thayil. His departure was widely viewed as shocking and abrupt, but his reasons for leaving were later explained that he had felt creatively stifled for some time within Soundgarden. Cameron also left soon after to join Pearl Jam in 1998. Following these events, Yamamoto also departed from the band due largely in part to creative differences as well.

Shepherd remained as the only original member in Soundgarden until he too departed from the band amicably in 2012 citing creative differences between him and Cornell as well as a feeling of stagnation creatively. In 2013, Thayil revealed that there were no plans for further activity from Soundgarden since their last tour promoting King Animal had wrapped up earlier that year; however he did not rule out further activity from them at some point down the road. On May 17th 2017 Cornell committed suicide by hanging at his Detroit hotel room following a performance with Soundgarden at a show earlier that evening making this their final album release with Cornell on vocals before his death
