If you’re looking for some new grunge music to add to your collection, check out these five recent releases. You won’t be disappointed.
Nirvana – “In Utero”
Nirvana’s final album was released on September 13th, 1993, just two weeks before singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain tragically took his own life. Despite the tragic timing, In Utero would go on to be a critical and commercial success, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 and going on to be certified 5x Platinum in the US. The album’s raw sound, courtesy of producer Steve Albini, was a departure from the polished sheen of 1991’s Nevermind, and tracks like “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies” would go on to become Nirvana classics.
Pearl Jam – “Vitalogy”
“Vitalogy” is the third studio album by American rock band Pearl Jam, released on November 22, 1994, through Epic Records. Despite concerns that the album would be a disappointment following the high commercial success of their previous album, “Vs.”, “Vitalogy” debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The album has been certified five times platinum by the RIAA in the United States. It is Pearl Jam’s last studio album to feature bassist Jeff Ament.
Soundgarden – “Superunknown”
Soundgarden’s fourth studio album, “Superunknown,” was released on March 8, 1994. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 310,000 copies in its first week. “Superunknown” was nominated for nine Grammy Awards, winning four, including Best Rock Album and Best Hard Rock Performance for the single “Black Hole Sun.”
Alice in Chains – “Dirt”
Alice in Chains released their second studio album, “Dirt” in September of 1992. The album has been hailed as one of the essential grunge albums, and is often considered the band’s best work. “Dirt” features some of Alice in Chains’ most well-known songs, including “Would?”, “Them Bones”, and “Angry Chair”.
Stone Temple Pilots – “Purple”
Stone Temple Pilots – “Purple”
The Stone Temple Pilots are back with their new album, Purple, and it’s sure to please any fan of the band’s grunge roots. The album’s first single, “Interstate Love Song”, is a classic STP tune that will get your head nodding along. Other tracks like “Big Empty” and “Sex Type Thing” show the band’s softer side, while still keeping the heaviness that made them famous. If you’re a fan of 90s grunge, then you need to check out Purple.
