Nirvana
Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. It was founded by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-lasting and best-known being Dave Grohl, who joined in 1990. Though often referred to as a grunge band, the style of their music draws on a variety of influences, including punk rock, heavy metal and folk.
Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, in its first year of eligibility. Cobain and Novoselic met while attending Aberdeen High School, although they never connected, according to Cobain. The pair eventually became friends while frequenting the practice space of the Melvins. Cobain wanted to form a band with Novoselic, but Novoselic did not respond for a long period of time. In persuading Novoselic to form a band with him, Cobain gave him a mix tape of his favorite underground bands. They eventually recruited Bob McFadden on drums. In early 1988, Crover recommended Dave Foster to record with them; however, by that time Foster had moved back to Florida after spending several months drumming for Malfunkshun at the request of rock photographer Charles Peterson. The following month, the band began recording its first demos; “Love Buzz” recordings from November are circulating among collectors and were officially released as part of With the Lights Out in 2004.
In early 1989, Crover moved to San Francisco but recommended that Nirvana keep Dresel on drums for their debut album Bleach; accordingly, Dresel recorded drums on eleven songs track listing may vary slightly which were tracked in Seattle between December 1988 and January 1989 at Reciprocal Recording with producer Jack Endino
Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam is an American rock band that formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. The band’s lineup consists of founding members Jeff Ament (bass guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), Mike McCready (lead guitar), and Eddie Vedder (lead vocals, guitar), as well as Matt Cameron (drums). Since its inception, Pearl Jam has released ten studio albums.
Pearl Jam rose to prominence with their debut album, Ten, in 1991. Ten’s commercial success was fueled by the popularity of the single “Alive”, which reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band followed up with Vs. (1993) and Vitalogy (1994). Their fourth album, No Code (1996), was less successful than previous releases; however, the band’s fifth album, Yield (1998) returned them to the top of Billboard 200 chart. In 2002, the band released their sixth studio album, Riot Act. Their seventh studio album, self-titled Pearl Jam, was released in 2006. Backspacer (2009) was the band’s first album to be entirely produced by Brendan O’Brien and debuted at number one on Billboard 200. The band’s ninth studio album Lightning Bolt, was released on October 15th 2013 and reached number one on Billboard 200 for the second time in Pearl Jam’s career.
To date, Pearl Jam has sold over thirty million records in the United States and an estimated sixty million worldwide. Pearl Jam has outlasted many of its contemporaries from the alternative rock explosion of the early 1990s. pearl Jam is considered one of the key bands of the grunge movement of the early 1990s and have been described as “the most popular American rock & roll band of the ’90s”. Spin magazine ranked them at number four on their list of “The 25 Greatest Live Bands Of All Time” in 2005
Soundgarden
Grunge music first burst onto the national scene in the early 1990s, with bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden leading the way. These bands came out of the Seattle area, which had a thriving underground music scene in the 1980s. Grunge was a raw, hard-edged form of rock that was heavily influenced by punk and metal. It was a major departure from the polished, hair metal that dominated the charts in the late 1980s.
Grunge quickly caught on with disaffected young people who were tired of the status quo. The grunge look – flannel shirts, ripped jeans and Doc Martens – became a symbol of rebellious youth. The music was dark and introspective, with lyrics that dealt with difficult subjects like loneliness, depression and drug addiction.
Soundgarden was one of the most successful grunge bands, selling millions of albums and scoring several hit singles. The band’s frontman, Chris Cornell, was a powerful singer with a four-octave range. He could deliver gut-wrenching screams one moment and tender ballads the next. Grunge fashions originated in the Pioneer Square area of Seattle during the late 1980s. Street kids from Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood would often frequent the downtown area looking for discarded clothing items from the numerous thrift stores in the area to use to keep warm during the cold winters.
