Though often labelled as grunge and therefore compared to other Seattle bands such as Pearl Jam, Nirvana’s eclectic musical style incorporated heavy metal and punk rock influences.

Nirvana’s success popularized alternative rock, broke into the mainstream in September 1991 with their breakthrough single “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, from the band’s second album Nevermind (1991). Cobain was noted for his angst-filled songwriting which explored themes of apathy, alienation, angst, and alienation.

Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam is an American rock band, formed in Seattle, Washington in 1990. The band’s lineup consists of founder Eddie Vedder (lead vocals, guitar), Jeff Ament (bass guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), Mike McCready (lead guitar), and Matt Cameron (drums). Soundgarden

Soundgarden is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984 by singer and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Matt Cameron became the band’s full-time drummer in 1986, while bassist Ben Shepherd became a permanent replacement for Yamamoto in 1990. The band built its reputation as part of the Seattle music scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, releasing platinum-selling albums such as Badmotorfinger (1991) and Superunknown (1994), which brought them international fame.

Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987 by guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cantrell and original lead vocalist Layne Staley. The initial lineup was rounded out by drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Inez. Although widely associated with grunge music, the band’s sound incorporates heavy metal elements. Since its formation, Alice in Chains has released six studio albums, three EPs, two live albums, four compilations, and one box set.

The band is known for its distinctive vocal style, which often included the harmonized vocals of Staley and Cantrell. Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s. The band’s first album, Facelift (1990), was a commercial success and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The success of the album led to Alice in Chains touring internationally for the first time and opening for national acts such as Van Halen, Queensrÿche, L7, and Metallica. In 1992, the band released Dirt; it has been certified four-times platinum by the RIAA for US sales exceeding four million copies.[1] The critical acclaim awarded to Dirt culminated with Alice in Chains winning Best Hard Rock Performance at 1994 MTV Video Music Awards.

The band took a hiatus from music in 1996 due to Staley’s substance abuse issues; he died three years later of a drug overdose.[2][3] After Staley’s death nearly two decades later, Cantrell and Kinney recruited William DuVall as lead vocalist to replace Staley on a reunited Alice in Chains’ self-titled fifth studio album (2018), which received gold certification by the RIAA within its first month of release.[4] Since 1996 DuVall has appeared on all subsequent studio releases including Black Gives Way to Blue (2009), The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (2013) Rainier Fog (2018).

Their next two albums, Freak Show (1997) and Neon Ballroom (1999), were also Australian chart-toppers.
