Alice in Chains is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1987 by guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney. The band’s original lineup was composed of bassist Mike Starr and lead singer Layne Staley. lead guitarist Stone Gossard joined the band as its tenth member shortly after Starr’s departure in 1993.

The band rose to international fame as a part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s. Their debut album, Facelift (1990), was released on August 21, 1990, and entered the Billboard 200 chart at number twelve, becoming the first Grunge album to achieve mainstream popularity. The success of the singles “Man in the Box”, “Down in a Hole”, and “Would? ” helped propel Facelift to quadruple platinum certification.

Alice in Chains’ second album, Dirt (1992), was released on September 29, 1992, and entered the Billboard 200 chart at number six, spending four weeks at that position and eventually being certified quadruple platinum. The singles “Them Bones”, “Would?”, and “Angry Chair” also enjoyed commercial success. In 1993, Alice in Chains was nominated for Grammy Awards for Best Hard Rock Performance (“Them Bones”) and Best Heavy Metal Performance (“Angry Chair”), winning the latter.

Despite their success, the band was plagued by drug addiction and internal conflict due to Layne Staley’s heroin addiction, which resulted in his death in 2002. After Staley’s death, Cantrell cancelled all tour dates[3] and entered a period of seclusion for more than a year.[4] During this time Cantrell worked on material for a solo album,[5] which he ultimately scrapped due to its raw emotional content.[6] In 2006, he began seeking other musicians to form a new band with Kinney and Gossard..
