What is Grunge?

The Origins of Grunge

Grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged during the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, particularly in the Seattle area. Known for its stripped-down sound and DIY aesthetic, grunge was a Reaction to the polished, overproduced hair metal and pop music of the 1980s. Early grunge bands such as Mudhoney, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam brought the genre to mainstream popularity in the early 1990s.

Grunge music is typically characterized by heavy guitars, vocals that are often distorted or screamed, and lyrics that deal with dark or emotional subject matter. The musical style is often a melding of punk rock and heavy metal, with some bands also incorporating elements of folk music, pop, and hip hop. Grunge fashion often includes ripped jeans, flannel shirts, and Converse sneakers.

The word “grunge” has been used to describe various music scenes since the 1960s. In 1967, British magazine Melody Maker used the term to describe Teenage Fanclub’s “Everything Flows”, while in 1975 Creem magazine used it to describe Rocket From The Tombs’ “So Young”. The Seattle scene came to be known as grunge in the late 1980s after several local groups (such as Green River and Nirvana) achieved mainstream success.

The term “grunge” was first used by Mark Arm of Green River in a letter to fanzine Desperate Times in early 1987; Arm used it to describe his band’s sound as “rawk” (a blend of rock and punk). In his 1989 book SubPop USA: The Subterranean Pop Music Anthology 1980–1988 , editor Greg Shaw described grunge as coming from “…the greatest underground music scene ever,” writing that Seattle was “…teeming with dozens – no hundreds – of great bands.”

The Sound of Grunge

Dir en grey

Dir en grey is a Japanese visual kei metal band, formed in 1997 and currently signed to Firewall Div., a sub-division of Free-Will. As of May 2016, they have released nine full-length albums, three mini-albums, twenty-seven singles and eighteen video albums. Their music has undergone numerous changes throughout their career, starting as “visual kei” with heavy musical influences from British and American hardcore punk and alternative rock bands such as The Stooges, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Neurosis, Mr. Bungle, Pixies as well as gothic rock artists such as And Also the Trees and Christian Death.

The early years (1997–1999)

Dir en grey formed in 1997 out of an underground music scene in Osaka that was influenced by British and American hardcore punk and alternative rock bands such as The Stooges, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Neurosis, Mr. Bungle, Pixies as well as gothic rock artists such as And Also the Trees and Christian Death. The band’s debut album Gauze was released in 1999 and featured a heavy “visual kei” look. The album was remastered and reissued in 2002 with two bonus tracks. In 2000, the band released Macabre, which featured a more experimental sound that included influences from trip hop and industrial music.

The middle years (2000–2003)

In 2001, Dir en grey released their third album Ai no Kusabi which saw the band moving away from their earlier “visual kei” look towards a more traditional metal appearance. The album was followed by the EPsix Ugly which featured six tracks that were recorded during the Ai no Kusabi sessions. In 2002 the band released Vulgar followed by another EP Chatterbox later that year. In 2003 Dir en grey toured America for the first time with support from Rob Zombie’s touring festival “Educated Horses”. The band also toured Europe for the first time in support of Vulgar.

The later years (2004–present)

In 2004 Dir en grey released Withering to Death.. which signalled a change in musical direction towards a more straight-forward metal sound while still retaining some of their earlier experimental elements. They also toured Japan with Slipknot during this time period. In 2005 they toured America again supporting Withering to Death.. as well as Europe where they headlined their own tour for the first time In 2006 Dir en grey returned to Europe for another headline tour before releasing their seventh album Agitated Screams of Maggots later that year which peaked at number two on Japan’s Oricon charts . They then embarked on another successful headline tour of Europe before returning to Japan to headline several shows at Yokohama Arena In 2007 Dir en grey supported Megadeth on their European tour before embarking on yet another successful headline European tour They also headlined several shows at Saitama Super Arena that year In 2008 Dir en grey supported Ozzy Osbourne on his Japanese tour before releasing their eighth album Uroboros in October which debuted at number one on Japan’s Oricon charts They then embarked on an extensive world tour to support Uroboros which lasted over a year In 2010 Dir en grey were special guests on Slayer’s American leg of their “World Painted Blood Tour” before embarking on another headline world tour . 2011 saw Dir en grey touring America with Deftones as well being special guests on Metallica’s Japanese leg of their “World Magnetic Tour” In 2012 Dir engrey embarked on yet another world tour which culminated with them headlining “Sumerian Records presents: Sounds Xchange Festival” alongside Asking Alexandria , Dancing With The Stars winner Donald Driver , Animals As Leaders , Periphery , I See Stars , Upon A Burning Body , Chelsea Grin , Attila & Eskimo Callboy Later that year they also headlined “JRock Revolution Festival” in Los Angeles alongside Schandmaul , Eluveitie & Powerman 5000

In 2013 Dir en grey celebrated their 15th anniversary with several special shows in Japan before embarking on yet another world tour which culminated with them playing two nights at Nippon Budokan Later that year they also headlined “JRock Invasion 3” alongside Schandmaul & Powerman 5000

Dir En Grey is currently working on a new album set to be released sometime in 2017

The GazettE

The GazettE is a Japanese visual kei rock band from Kanagawa Prefecture. The band formed in 2002 and currently consists of five members. The GazettE has released nine studio albums, three live albums, three compilation albums, and 27 singles.

The GazettE’s music is characterized by aggressive melodies and powerful instrumentation, with influences from hardcore punk, deathcore, and metalcore. The band is known for their complex song structures and dark lyrical themes, which often deal with mental health issues, depression, and suicide.

The GazettE have been acclaimed by both fans and critics alike, earning a loyal following both in Japan and overseas. The band has received numerous awards and nominations, including two consecutive Japan Record Awards for Best Rock Album. The GazettE has also been ranked on multiple lists of the best Japanese rock bands of all time.

Maximum the Hormone

Maximum the Hormone is a Japanese rock band from Hachioji, Tokyo. Formed in 1998, they played their first gig at a local music festival in 1999. The band’s lineup has changed several times since its inception, with bassist and lead vocalist Daisuke-han remaining the only constant member.

The band’s musical style has been described as a mix of punk rock, metal and pop. They have cited American rock bands such as Nirvana, Green Day and the Pixies as influences, as well as Japanese bands such as theirezumi, Glay and X Japan.

Maximum the Hormone’s debut album,. entitled Mitsudomoe Zouryouchuu!, was released in 2002. The album was a commercial success, reaching number five on the Oricon chart. It was followed by two more studio albums, Kusoban (2004) and Buiikikaesu (2007), both of which were also commercially successful.

The band’s fourth studio album,. Kiseki no Sedai, was released in 2010 and reached number two on the Oricon chart. It was followed by another studio album, Shimi (2013), which reached number four on the chart. The band’s most recent album,. YōkabolagettonaBBM&Toni., was released in 2016 and debuted at number one on the Oricon chart.

Maximum the Hormone has also released three live albums and two compilation albums. The band has toured extensively throughout Japan and Europe, headlining several music festivals such as Fuji Rock Festival, Reading Festival and Download Festival.
