The Statler Brothers
The Statler Brothers were an American country music, gospel, and vocal group. The quartet was formed in 1955 performing locally in Staunton, Virginia. The group originally consisted of the brothers Cecil Statler and Harold Reid (both lead vocals, guitar, and bass), their cousin Lew DeWitt (guitar and tenor vocals), and Don Reid (guitar and baritone vocals). In 1964, they began working as the backup band for Johnny Cash who convinced them to move to Nashville, Tennessee. The group continued to perform and record productively until Lew DeWitt’s death from Crohn’s disease in 1990; Harold Reid’s retirement from singing due to health problems in 1991; and the retirement of Don Reid in 1999. The brothers wrote all of their own material except for a few songs written by Lew DeWitt. All five recorded for Columbia Records except for a short stint with Mercury Records during 1967-68; they also recorded several albums for Starday/King Records during this period.
Following Harold’s retirement for health reasons in 1991, Joe McDorman took over as lead singer until Don retired from performing in 1999; then Michael English took over as lead singer until he was replaced by Jimmy Fortune in 2002 who continues as the lead singer today.”
