Introduction
Gospel music is a genre of Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace.
The earliest gospel songs were written and composed by black slaves in the American south who were converted to Christianity in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These early gospel songs were characterized by simple melodies and harmonies, as well as repetitive refrains. These songs were typically modeled after hymns sung in white churches but with added embellishments that helped distinguish them from white worship music.
One of the most popular forms of contemporary gospel music is urban contemporary gospel, which is a genre that combines traditional black gospel with elements of hip hop, R&B, and pop. This type of gospel music often has a more radio-friendly sound than traditional black gospel and is designed to appeal to a wider range of listeners.
Other popular genres of gospel music include Southern gospel, which is a form of religious country music; contemporary Christian music, which is a genre that fuses Christian lyrics with pop musical styles; and Celtic Christian music, which is a fusion of traditional Scottish or Irish musical styles with Christian lyrics.
The State of Gospel Music in 2015

Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace.
Gospel music generally has a dominant vocalist and accompanying instruments, either a soloist or a small ensemble. The genre emerged in the early 19th century with performances by itinerant musicians known as gospel preachers or jubilee singers. It was originally popularized by African American musicians such as Mahalia Jackson and Thomas A. Dorsey. Gospel music has attracted international audiences since the mid-20th century.
The term “gospel music” can refer to either the religiousmusic of evangelism or to the often secularized style of black popular music that evolved out of the spirituals and blues tradition.”
The Top Gospel Songs of 2015
It’s hard to deny that gospel music is one of the most, if not the, popular genres in the world. From the traditional hymns to the more modern songs, there’s a gospel tune for everyone. Here are some of the top gospel songs of 2015.
“Amazing Grace” by John Newton
“Amazing Grace” is a hymn that has been performed and recorded by many different artists over the years. The lyrics were written by John Newton, an English poet and hymnist, in the late 18th century. The tune was originally composed by an unknown artist and was first published in 1779.
The song has since become one of the most popular gospel songs of all time and has been recorded by both contemporary and traditional Christian artists. In 2015, several different versions of “Amazing Grace” were released, including renditions by Josh Groban, Nancy Wilson, and Hillsong Worship.
“How Great Thou Art” by Carl Boberg
The beautiful hymn, “How Great Thou Art” has often been voted the number one favorite hymn of all time. It first appeared in a small Swedish paper way back in 1885 and was titled, “O Store Gud” which translates to “O Great God.” The author, Carl Boberg was only 22 at the time he wrote this treasured hymn. He was spending a lovely summer day outside in the Swedish countryside when suddenly a fierce thunderstorm rolled in. As he watched the storm rage, all he could think about was how great and powerful our God is!
“Amazing Love” by Chris Tomlin
This song is from the album “Never Lose Sight” released in 2016. The album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart. “Amazing Love” was co-written by Tomlin, Ed Cash and Matt Redman. The latter two also produced the track.
The song was inspired by the story of a woman named Ruth in the Bible. In the book of Ruth, Ruth leaves her home and family to follow her husband, Naomi, to a new land. After Naomi’s husband and sons die, she is left with nothing but Ruth. Ruth chooses to stay with Naomi and pledges to God that she will never leave her.
The song talks about how God’s love is amazing and how He extends that love to us even when we don’t deserve it. It is a reminder that no matter what we go through in life, God’s love is always there for us.
