Easter Hymns

Easter is a religious holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is observed on the Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox. This year, Easter will be observed on April 12. Christians all around the world will attend church services and celebrate with their families. Easter is also a time for traditional gospel music.

Christ the Lord is Risen Today

One of the most popular Easter hymns, “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” was written by Charles Wesley in 1739. The hymn is based on a 13th century Latin Easter sequence, which itself was based on an even older 12th century plainchant melody.

The original Latin sequence, “Resurrexi et adhuc tecum sum” (I have risen and am still with you), was written by an anonymous author and first appeared in a French manuscript from about 1270. It appears in several other manuscripts from the same period, including one from England. The English version of the sequence is known as the “Tantum Ergo.”

The Latin text of “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” was translated into English by John Mason Neale in 1851. Neale was a noted hymnologist and scholar of medieval church music. He also wrote several other well-known hymns, including “Good Christian Men, Rejoice” and “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.”

Today, “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” is sung throughout the world on Easter Sunday as a celebration of Christ’s resurrection. It has been set to many different tunes over the years, but the most common one is called “Easter Hymn” or “Lyra Davidica.” This tune was first published in 1708 and was originally intended to be sung to a different text.

He Lives

He Lives is a popular Easter hymn that has been recorded by many artists over the years. The song was written by Alfred H. Ackley and was first published in 1948. It has since become a Easter Sunday staple for many churches around the world.

The lyrics of the song focus on the resurrection of Jesus Christ and serve as a reminder that because he lives, we can face tomorrow with hope. This message of hope and change is something that we all need, especially during difficult times.

If you are looking for a Easter Sunday Gospel music playlist, be sure to give He Lives a listen. It is sure to fill your heart with hope and joy this Easter season!

Low in the Grave He Lay

“Low in the Grave He Lay” is a Christian Easter hymn written by Robert Robinson. The lyrics of the hymn reflect on the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The first stanza of the hymn reflects on the death of Christ on the cross and how his body was laid in a tomb. The second stanza reflects on Christ’s resurrection from the dead and how he conquered death. The third stanza reflects on how Christ’s resurrection offers hope for those who believe in him.

The tune for “Low in the Grave He Lay” was originally composed by Jeremiah Clarke for the funeral march of Prince George II of Great Britain in 1760. The tune was later adapted by Robinson for his Easter hymn. “Low in the Grave He Lay” is sometimes known by its alternate title, “Up from the Grave He Arose.”

Because He Lives

Because He Lives, I can face tomorrow,
Because He Lives, all fear is gone,
Because I know He holds the future,

His promise is enough,

Chorus:

Living, He loved me,

Dying, He saved me,

Buried, He carried my sins far away,

Rising, He justified freely forever:

One day He’s coming--Oh glory! One day the dead in Christ will rise.

I Can Only Imagine

The song, I Can Only Imagine was released in 2001 by the Christian rock band, MercyMe. The song is based on the story of lead singer Bart Millard’s journey with his father, who died of cancer. The song is about imagining what it will be like to be in heaven and was inspired by a conversation that Millard had with his father shortly before his death.
