Jim Felix’s musical journey

Jim Felix’s musical journey began in the early 1970’s when he started playing the drums in a local country band. It was through this band that he met Jerry Lee Lewis, who would later invite Jim to play drums on his album “The Gospel Music of Jerry Lee Lewis.” From there, Jim’s career took off and he went on to tour with some of the biggest names in country music, including Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and George Jones. In the late 1970’s, Jim decided to focus on his own career and released his first album, “The Gospel Music of Jim Felix.” Since then, he has released twelve more albums and has become one of the most respected gospel musicians in the world.

The early years

Jim Felix was born in 1951 in Hartford, Connecticut. His father, a factory worker and part-time musician, exposed him to the music of Mahalia Jackson, Andraé Crouch, and James Cleveland. As a teenager, Felix played the drums in his father’s band at local clubs. He began singing in the choir at his church and eventually started writing his own gospel songs.

In 1970, Felix joined the Air Force. It was while he was stationed in Germany that he formed a gospel group called The Chosen Few. The group toured throughout Europe and the United States, performing at military bases and churches. They recorded two albums, ‘Songs of Praise’ (1973) and ‘Lord, I’m Available to You’ (1975).

After his discharge from the Air Force, Felix returned to the United States and enrolled in college. He earned a degree in music education and then a master’s degree in music theory and composition. He taught music for a few years before embarking on a career as a professional musician.

The formation of the band

The Jim Felix Gospel Music Band was formed in the late 1990s by singer, songwriter and guitarist Jim Felix. The band has gone through several lineup changes over the years, but its core members have always been Jim Felix (lead vocals, guitar), Mike LaValle (bass) and Gary Marcus (drums). The band has released four albums: “Live at the Zoo” (1999), “Songs from the Heart” (2001), “The Gospel Truth” (2003) and “Wonderful World” (2010).

The first album

The first album was recorded in Nashville, TN and released in 1978. It was produced by Ace Cannery and featured some of the top musicians in Gospel music at the time. The album included 12 songs, all of which were written or co-written by Jim Felix.

The second album

The second album by Jim Felix, The Gospel Music of Jim Felix, was released in 2006. The album includes eleven tracks of gospel music sung by Felix.

The present day

Jim Felix is a singer, songwriter, and arranger who has been making Gospel music for over 30 years. His music is a blend of traditional and contemporary styles, with a focus on accessibility and singability. He has been praised for his “infectious” melodies and “heartfelt” lyrics.

In recent years, Felix has released two albums of original Gospel music: “Songs for the Journey” (2011) and “Grace Notes” (2014). He has also published a collection of sheet music for his songs, which are popular among churches andchoirs.
