No Time for Sergeants
No Time for Sergeants is an album of gospel music by Andy Griffith. It was released in 1963 by Capitol Records. The album features religious songs performed in Griffith’s folk style. Though it was not a commercial success, No Time for Sergeants is considered one of Griffith’s finest works and alost country gospel classic.
The album opens with “Just a Closer Walk with Thee”, a traditional gospel song that has been performed by numerous artists over the years. Griffith’s version is uptempo and lively, with a touch of his Appalachian roots showing through. “Beaulah Land” is a slower, more reflective piece that showcases Griffith’s beautiful baritone voice. “I’d Rather Have Jesus” is another traditional gospel song that has been covered by many artists, including country music legend Hank Williams. Griffith’s version is faithful to the original while adding his own unique flavor to it.
The album also includes two original compositions by Griffith: “The Preacher and the Stranger” and “Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?”. “The Preacher and the Stranger” is a light-hearted tale of a country preacher who tries to help a homeless man, only to find out that the man is actually an escaped convict. “Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?” is a more serious song about the hardships of the Depression-era American South. Both songs are excellent examples of Griffith’s gift for storytelling through song.
No Time for Sergeants is an essential album for fans of Andy Griffith or anyone who enjoys quality gospel music performed with heart and soul.
