The cousins were: James, Eugene, and George Johnson, Melvin and Mabon Hodges, and Vera and Valerie Johnson. The group began singing in the local church circuit in the Mobile area and eventually began touring throughout the southeastern United States. In 1971, the group released their first album, entitled “Songs of Faith”, on the Fort Wayne label. The album was met with critical acclaim, and helped to increase the group’s profile within the gospel music community.

The following year, the Relatives Gospel Music Group released their second album, “Live at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church”. The album was recorded live during a performance at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama. The album featured guest appearances from several other gospel artists, including James Cleveland and Dorothy Norwood. “Live at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church” is considered by many to be one of the greatest live gospel albums ever recorded.
