The Ancient Music Box That Plays Techno
Contents
The music box is a beautiful ancient instrument that has been around for centuries.
The Music Box
The music box is a small, rectangular, usually wooden box with a lid. The lid is hinged, and when opened, it reveals a small compartment that contains a cylinder with pins. The cylinder is turned by a crank, and as it turns, the pins strike the tuned teeth of a steel comb. This produces a sound that is similar to a music box.
What is a music box?
A music box is a 19th-century automatic musical instrument that produces sounds by means of a set of pins placed on a revolving cylinder or disc so as to strike the tuned teeth of a steel comb. They were developed from musical snuff boxes of the 18th century and, like many other 19th-century inventions, they found their place in Victorian boudoirs and drawing rooms, where they were prized by adults and children alike.
How does a music box work?
A music box or musical box is an automatic musical instrument in a box which produces sounds by the use of a set of pins placed on a revolving cylinder or disc so as to pluck the tuned teeth (or lamellae) of a steel comb. They were developed from musical snuff boxes of the 18th century and called carillons à musique. Some of the more complex boxes also have a tiny drum and/or bells, in addition to the metal comb.
The original snuff boxes were tiny containers which fitted into a waistcoat pocket. The musicboxes could be mistaken for a jewel case, but they are usually larger. 14-note music boxes play a scale similar to that of small organettes, but with only one octave. 28-note boxes have twice the range. 50-note music boxes were made in the late 19th century, but were quite rare; 80-note music boxes became available near the end of that century. These large music boxes are called carillons à musique; some were two feet high, and some four feet high; they were wound with two separate tunes on two separate combs so that one tune could be playing while the other was being wound up (see video at right).
Music boxes are usually wound with a key, which turns a ratchet that tightens a spiral spring inside the box. As this spring unwinds, it turns a gearsurrounded by cams on top of the shaft inside the box (see video below). These cams lift small levers called hammers which are connected to tuned prongs (tines), causing them to strike metal plates or (in older models) teeth on a steel comb mounted inside machinery at the base of the box. The striking of these plates or comb produces the sound of the melody.
The Ancient Music Box
This is the story of an old music box that was found in the attic of an old house. The music box was dusty and looked like it hadn’t been touched in years. When the music box was opened, the only thing inside was a small, rusty key. When the key was turned, the music box played a techno song that was oddly modern sounding.

The ancient music box is a type of music box that was popular in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. These music boxes were often decorated with intricate designs and carvings, and they played a variety of different tunes. The ancient music box was usually made from wood, metal, or porcelain, and it was powered by a wind-up spring.
How does the ancient music box work?
The ancient music box is a fascinating contraption that has been used for centuries to play music. The basic principle behind the music box is very simple: a rotating cylinder with teeth interacts with a series of tuned steel forks to create a melody. As the cylinder turns, the teeth strike the forks, causing them to vibrate and produce sound. The faster the cylinder turns, the higher the pitch of the notes that are produced.
