What is EDM?

EDM is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged in the early 1990s. It is characterized by a fast tempo, often 150 to 200 beats per minute, synth-driven melodies, and a heavy bass.

Origins

While disco was hitting its stride in the late ‘70s, a new breed of electronic music was bubbling up in Europe. This new sound would come to be known as EDM, or electronic dance music.

The pioneers of EDM were using synthesizers and drum machines to create atmospheric, mind-bending soundscapes that were unlike anything anyone had ever heard before. These early innovators laid the foundation for the genre, and their influence can still be heard in today’s EDM.

The first wave of EDM artists came from Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. These European countries were at the forefront of the synthesizer revolution, and they quickly put this new technology to use in creating innovative new sounds.

One of the most influential early EDM artists was German producer Klaus Schulze. Schulze was a member of the Berlin School of electronic music, and he released a string of groundbreaking albums in the ‘70s that explore the outer limits of what synthesizers could do. His work laid the groundwork for future generations of EDM producers.

Another influential early EDM artist is Giorgio Moroder. Moroder is an Italian producer who is best known for his work with disco legend Donna Summer. He helped propel disco into the mainstream with hits like “I Feel Love” and “Last Dance”. Moroder’s work would go on to inspire a whole new generation of electronic producers.

The Dutch band Kraftwerk is also considered one of the pioneers of EDM. Kraftwerk’s signature sound is a perfect blend of man and machine, and their songs are some of the most iconic in all of electronic music. Kraftwerk’s influence can be heard in everything from techno to hip-hop
