In 2009 MGMT contributed a T-shirt design for official Causes merchandise to support jazz pianist Brad Mehldau’s Global Fundraising Campaign for Rwanda through The Pierre Cardin Charity Fund. The design features a picture of a Rwanda Mapambazuko drummer with “Jazz Beyond Borders” written above it.

The group’s first full-length album, Oracular Spectacular, debuted in October 2007. It features the popular singles “Time to Pretend”, “Weekend Wars”, and “Kids”. These three songs peaked at #4, #34, and #21 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, respectively. The album was awarded a 5-star review from Allmusic,[16] with Rob Sayce of the NME calling it “a debut album almost unbearably cool in its casual excellence”.[17] In June 2008, spin.com ranked Oracular Spectacular as the year’s best album so far.[18]
In October 2008, MGMT toured Australia and New Zealand with Yeah Yeah Yeahs and M.I.A..[19] Later that month, the band performed for the first time on Saturday Night Live,[20][21] where they performed “Time to Pretend” and “Kids”.[22][23] In December 2008, Rolling Stone named MGMT Artist of the Year.[24][25] That same month, the band appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.[26] The band was also featured as one of 2008’s runner-ups in Spin magazine’s annual Top 40 Bands list.[27][28]
